In Ethiopia, the Foundation carried out a range of developmental activities since its official registration as INGO in Nov 2016. With focus in Benishangul-Gumuz region it has so far successfully implemented various projects. It embarked on a new extended five years program known as Social and Economic Empowerment Program (SEEP). The foundation has a separate Infrastructure Development Unit (IDU) in BGRS programme office which is responsible for planning and overseeing all the constructions of different physical infrastructure in planned under the programme.

Position Description:

The junior engineer will have a supporting role in the unit with key responsibilities of design and detail bill of quantity development and supervision of construction sites which are either to be executed with own-force or by out sourced contract types. The position will be based in Assosa, Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State (BGRS) of Ethiopia, with regular travel to programme sites in the BGRS and occasional travel to Addis Ababa.

 Position Role and responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the construction of different physical infrastructure in BGRS. She/He will work in the IDU department with close coordination with other members of the team, under the direct supervision of the unit coordinator. She/he is expected to be subject-matter expert and shall complete all routine tasks that are assigned by the unit coordinator to make sure that quality is assured in all construction activities and documents prepared.

General constructions’ planning and design

  • Prepare working design and drawings whenever needed, for construction works according to the sketches prepared by the unit coordinator.
  • Participate in reviewing drawings and quantities prepared by external sources in case of large scale construction works.
  • Develop detail bill of quantity for all construction activities.
  • Participate in bid document preparation and evaluation of submitted bids.
  • Is able to read and understand all drawings AR, ST, EL & SN properly.
  • Have full knowledge in all engineering software such as AutoCAD, excel, ETABS…

Contract Management and construction supervision

  • Make sure construction supervision works are done with expected quality, according to working drawings and contract agreement.
  • Report any omission, fault, quality problems or deviation seen during site visit to the IDU coordinator timely.
  • Ensure that technical quality and standards are considered and achieved during construction.
  • Participate in construction bid opening, registration, evaluation and recording of results during bid.
  • Regular site supervision of all sites according to the working program of the team.
  • Control material and workmanship quality which are used by the contractor on construction sites.
  • Check and correct take off and payment request that is submitted by contractors according to measurements taken and submit to IDU coordinator.
  • Prepare site report when required.

Job Requirements

Education /Experience /Language requirements and other competencies 

 Education

  • Advanced/ degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is required.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as civil engineer, construction site supervisor is required.
  • Experience in design preparation works and supervision in areas outside of Addis Ababa is an asset.

Language Requirements and other skills

  •  Full working knowledge of English and Amharic is essential.
  • Site supervision – knowing all steps to be taken and the mandatory points to be checked during site supervision is expected from an engineer for all site supervision activities.
  • Professional ethics – keeping the professional ethics and protecting the office secrete at all times is most expected.
  • Creativity – an ability to come up with creative and scientific solutions to solve potential problems that might happen on site, during construction activities is always a good quality that is expected from a site supervising engineer.
  • Drawing and quantity preparation skills – drawing, designing and quantity preparation skills are essential skills for an engineer to execute working responsibilities well.
  • Checking take-off –  to be able to check and correct a take-off that is submitted by a contractor carefully is one of the basic skills that is expected from the junior engineer.
