Job Description

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

Perform clinical laboratory activities according to MSF protocols, security and hygiene measures in order to obtain results to determine the patient’s treatment.

While assigned in Emergency Room Lab

  • Manage all MSF laboratory activities in Emergency Room RHB’s laboratory, by insuring a high quality service, through the use of acceptable MSF quality control protocols.
  • According to medical prescription, prepare and perform clinical Emergencies exams/tests with appropriate techniques and following MSF protocols and procedures. This function includes, among others:

–             Taking blood samples;

–             Centrifuge samples;

–             Use of Rapid diagnostic Tests;

–             Perform laboratory exams (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology or parasitological, according to context of the mission).

  • Ensure proper reporting and registration of the sample results in order to keep a written track of activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Responsible for ordering and monitoring the consumption of reagents and laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure proper usage of all MSF laboratory material in collaboration with RHB labtech manager.
  • Ensure correct handling and transporting of specimen and samples to be analyzed in referral labs.
  • Follows universal precautions and waste management procedures within the laboratory including, but not exclusively:

–             Handling of biological specimens;

–             Safe disposal of sharps & potentially infected material;

–             Decontamination & disinfection procedures;

–             Wearing of protective clothing.

  • To ensure proper use, security, maintenance and prompt service of the laboratory machines plus all other laboratory instruments in collaboration with RHB lab manager.
  • Keep organized the data collection system of laboratory results and all information generated from.

While assigned in Blood Bank

  • According to medical prescription, prepare and perform clinical exams/tests with appropriate techniques and following MSFprotocols and procedures. This function includes, among others:

–             Taking blood, vaginal and urethral samples.

–             Centrifuge blood and urine samples.

–             Perform laboratory exams (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology or parasitological, according to context of the mission).

  • Ensure proper reporting and registration of the sample results in order to keep a written track of activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Take care, manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment:

–             Apply hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing general glassware after procedures are done.

–             Ensuring proper sample waste disposal according to MSF protocols and highest safety standards.

–             Supply orders, do stock, storage conditions follow-up, keep inventory.

  • Keep organized the data collection system of laboratory results and all information generated from the analysis done.
  • Report all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the line manager, especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or medicines.
  • Screening the collected blood for transfusion transmissible infections (HIV,HBV,HCV and syphilis) by nationally recommended method and standard
  • Carry out routine blood typing on blood samples from collected units.
  • Label blood units designated to be used for transfusion
  • Prepare blood components (concentrated red cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate) if needed.
  • Ensure the proper recording of results before issuing blood in hospital
  • Carry out distribution of blood and blood components to Gambella Hospital.
  • Adhere to all policies, SOPs, regulatory guidelines and laboratory safety requirements in performing routine activities
  • Carry out daily/weekly preventive maintenance of equipment in blood bank laboratory.
  • Ensure the recommended cold chain is maintained
  • Participate in blood collection campaigns
  • Execute internal and external quality control tests related to blood bank laboratory
  • Ensure safety in the Laboratory
  • Ensure the inventory management of blood and blood components.
  • Participate in staff trainings

Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisors.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Gambela region has doubled its population due to the arrival of refugees, mainly from South Sudan. MSF is working in the only referral hospital in Gambela region in direct colaboration with the RHB staff. We also have a health promotion team working in the community.
  • MSF is an independent, neutral and impartial organisation that is providing quality medical care free of charge regardeles the ethnic origin of our patients, so to both local and refugee population.
  • We ensure that our staff is aware and respect the cultural differences of our patients and collaborates with the RHB staff in an equaly respectful way.
  • There are still many challenges in the hospital that will require from our staff a big flexibility to adapt to the needs: changes in the location or the specific tasks that the staff was performing, extra hours, etc We are an emergency organisation so in case of any outbreak or emergency situation, the priority for the project will be to respond to the emergency, so the staff can be requested to shift from his/her usual job to support in that response.

You will attend to the mandatory trainings organized for your position and implement the lessons learnt in those trainings in your daily work. Also you will consult your supervisors for any doubt and suggest any topic for future trainings that you consider necessary.

Essential Laboratory Technician diploma /degree from recognized university/college.

Experience:

Minimum 2 year working experience essential.

Practical experience on ELISA testing technology

Languages:

Mission language desirable and local language essential

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
