Lily of the Valley Children’s Village is a CYCC located in rural KZN near Camperdown. We have a license for 120 children and youth in need of care and currently have 35 of Junior School age and 28 of High School age. We have been home schooling the children during the Covid-19 lockdown and believe this is providing a better education than they are receiving at the local schools.

Lily of the Valley Child and Youth Care Centre seeks to appoint a Child and Youth Care Worker to be based in Pietermaritzburg.

The purpose of the child and youth care worker is responsible for provision of basic developmental care of children and youth where their emotional, spiritual, cognitive and social needs are protected.
Lily of the valley is looking for an energetic, reliable, honest and committed FEMALE child and youth care worker.

Summary of duties and responsibilities:

  • The duties of a child and youth care worker include: life skill teaching, crisis intervention, planning and participating in educational, social and recreational activities.
  • Assists with the implementation of programmes and activities for children and youth on the basis of their identified developmental needs.
  • Participation in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Responsible for the direct care, supervision and development of the children and youth, ensuring that each child and youth receives the highest possible level of care and support; including consistent emotional and physical nurture suitable to the developmental needs of each child.
  • Compliance with Lily policies, and to CYCC standards as defined in the Children’s Act.
  • Adhere to child and youth care work code of ethics and programmatic standard operating procedures and principles
  • Develop a positive rapport with children and youth while serving as a role model to create a safe and loving environment
  • Maintain a hazard free and orderly household, prepare meals in accordance with the posted menu, administer medication in accordance with doctor’s guidance, complete all required medication charts, forms and incident reports.
  • Attend mandatory trainings, workshops, and meetings as required by the organization to enhance professional growth

This is a live-in position; the child and youth care worker will reside with the children at Lily of the Valley child and youth care center. Due to the nature of this position, you are required to work on weekends and holidays.
Knowledge, skills and abilities: Strong organizational and administrative skills, excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal relationship skills, problem solving, must have a broad knowledge of the Children’s Act, Regulations, and a thorough understanding of the normal growth and developmental needs of children and youth.  Demonstrated ability to work with children and youth with diverse background. Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes communication and lead to a co-operative approach to problem solving within a multidisciplinary setting. Demonstrated ability to adhere to policies and respond to supervision. Must have knowledge and ability to assist children with their school work. Must have broad knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and ART. Knowledge of the rules and procedures of the center. Fluency in isiZulu, and competency in English are required.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 Certificate;
  • Certificate in Child & Youth Care qualification as recognized by HWSETA/ National Diploma in Child and Youth Care Development;
  • Registration with South African Council for Social Services Professions as a Child and Youth Care Worker;
  • Proof of current Registration with the South African Council for Social Services Professions as Child Youth Care Worker;
  • 3-5 years’ work experience as a child and youth care worker in a residential care environment after obtaining a required certificate;
  • Child protection register and police clearance certificate.

This full-time position will suit a mature and responsible person who is prepared to work according to Lily of the Valley’s Christian values. This person must be between 33-40 years old, non-smoker and drinker.
