Action Against Hunger Nigeria (ACF Nigeria) Ltd/Gte is currently seeking to fill the position of MAMI Officer.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the direct technical oversight, clinical quality assurance, and field-level implementation of the Management of Small and Nutritionally At-Risk Infants Under 6 Months of Age and Their Mothers (MAMI) approach.

Key Responsibilities:

Mission 1: Establish, implement, and supervise MAMI activities within health facilities and communities
The MAMI Officer is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the delivery of high-quality clinical and nutritional care for at-risk infants under 6 months and their mothers using the MAMI Care Pathway package.
  • Overseeing community screening, triage, admission, clinical assessment, counseling, and referral pathways.
  • Integrating MAMI within broader Primary Health Care (ANC/PNC, EPI, IMCI, Maternity) and IMAM/Stabilization Centre services.

Tasks:

  • Implement and update the detailed operational plan for MAMI activities across supported health facilities and catchment communities.
  • Supervise the application of MAMI triage and screening tools (MUAC for infants <6m where applicable/validated, growth monitoring/WFL Z-scores, clinical signs of severe vulnerability, breastfeeding/feeding difficulties, and maternal nutritional/mental health status).
  • Ensure supportive, skilled counseling on exclusive breastfeeding, lactation support, relactation, expression of breast milk, and management of breast conditions (e.g., mastitis, cracked nipples, engorgement).
  • Ensure maternal health and nutrition assessment (maternal MUAC, micronutrient supplementation, postpartum care, and psychosocial distress screening) is consistently carried out alongside infant care.
  • Oversee the identification of infant/maternal danger signs and ensure timely stabilization and referral of complicated cases to Inpatient Care / Stabilization Centres.
  • Conduct regular on-site supportive supervision and clinical coaching for health facility staff and community nutrition workers to uphold high standards of quality and patient safety.

Mission 2: Capacity building and technical mentorship for ACF teams and SPHCDA / MoH health workers
The MAMI Officer is responsible for:

  • Assessing clinical and counseling competencies of facility staff and community health workers regarding the MAMI approach.
  • Designing and facilitating structured on-the-job training, mentorship, and refresher sessions.
  • Ensuring adherence to national protocols, WHO guidelines, and the MAMI Global Network Care Pathway.

Tasks:

  • Identify training needs and competency gaps among facility nurses, midwives, CHEWs, and community nutrition volunteers.
  • Organize and conduct practical, competency-based training sessions on:
    • Infant and maternal assessment, anthropometric measurement, and clinical triage.
    • Practical breastfeeding assessment and lactation counseling (positioning, attachment, counseling cards).
    • Safe cup feeding, supplementary suckling technique (SST), and non-breastfed infant management protocols.
    • Maternal nutrition, postpartum care, and integration with Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services.
  • Provide continuous coaching and conduct case reviews during facility visits to reinforce learning.
  • Support the institutional capacity building of SPHCDA staff to ensure ownership and sustainability of the mother-infant care pathway.

Mission 3: Team leadership, community mobilization, and day-to-day workflow management
The MAMI Officer is responsible for:

  • Day-to-day coordination, guidance, and supervision of facility MAMI focal staff and community mobilizers.
  • Structuring efficient patient flow and baby-friendly consultation spaces at health facilities.
  • Fostering strong linkage between community platforms (Care Groups, Porridge Mums, Lead Mothers) and health facilities.

Tasks:

  • Develop weekly and monthly movement and duty rosters for facility support and community follow-up.
  • Lead regular operational review meetings with facility teams and community mobilizers to review caseloads, defaulter tracing, and challenges.
  • Ensure designated private, culturally sensitive, and comfortable counseling spaces for mothers and infants at clinic sites.
  • Supervise community-based active screening and home-visit follow-up for discharged dyads or infants failing to thrive.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and objective setting for directly managed project staff in coordination with HR.
  • Ensure safety and security protocols are strictly observed during all community and facility missions.

Mission 4: Supply chain, logistics, and resource management for MAMI services
The MAMI Officer is responsible for:

  • Ensuring uninterrupted availability of essential commodities, medical equipment, and tools necessary for MAMI services.
  • Proper storage, utilization, and rational use of project supplies.

Tasks:

  • Monitor the consumption and stock levels of MAMI-specific equipment (infant length boards, specialized infant scales, infant MUAC tapes, SST kits/feeding cups, counseling aids, job aids).
  • Prepare timely internal purchase requisitions (PRs) and stock requests in coordination with the Base Logistics team and Programme Manager.
  • Ensure essential medications, therapeutic supplies, and maternal supplements are appropriately maintained and stored in line with good storage practices.
  • Alert the Programme Manager to any impending stock-outs or supply pipeline bottlenecks.

Mission 5: Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) & Reporting
The MAMI Officer is responsible for:

  • Maintaining accurate, reliable, and up-to-date patient registers and databases for mother-infant dyads.
  • Preparing timely qualitative and quantitative activity progress reports.
  • Documenting lessons learned, success stories, and clinical case studies.

Tasks:

  • Supervise the daily use of MAMI clinical recording tools, registers, mother-infant dyad cards, and tally sheets.
  • Compile and validate monthly facility data, ensuring accurate reporting on key indicators (admissions, cure rate, defaulter rate, referral rate, weight gain velocity, breastfeeding outcomes).
  • Prepare and submit timely inputs for the monthly Activity Progress Report (APR) and donor reports to the Programme Manager.
  • Participate in monthly data review meetings with SPHCDA LGA teams to provide feedback on facility performance and data quality.
  • Support baseline/endline assessments, nutrition surveys, and qualitative evaluations related to infant feeding and care practices.

Mission 6: Internal integration, representation, and local partnership
The MAMI Officer is responsible for:

  • Ensuring multi-sectoral linkages between MAMI, Reproductive Health, IMCI, MHPSS, FSL, and WASH.
  • Maintaining positive collaboration with local health authorities, community leaders, and partner agencies at the LGA level.

Tasks:

  • Collaborate closely with the MHPSS Officer and team to ensure clear referral pathways for mothers experiencing perinatal depression or high levels of distress.
  • Work with the Health and Nutrition Officers and WASH teams to promote clean water access and optimal hygiene for postpartum mothers.
  • Represent Action Against Hunger in LGA-level nutrition and primary healthcare coordination meetings when requested by the Programme Manager.
  • Maintain regular dialogue with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community elders to build community trust, demystify small/sick infant stigma, and encourage early health-seeking behavior

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, Nutrition and dietetics or other relevant qualifications with experience in Public Health and IMAM programming;
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions;
  • Prepared to live and work in an uncertain security environment;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Hausa.
  • Good Communication and Interpersonal skills.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience in a similar position
  • Excellent report writing skills and proficient in Microsoft Office software Skills (Outlook, Excel, Power Point, Word);
  • Proven experience in MAMI, IYCF-E, Inpatient Stabilization Care / IMAM, or Neonatal & Child Survival (IMCI/KMC) interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting clinical mentorship and adult-learning training for health facility workers.
