CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

Level 1: the post holder will not have contact with children and/or young people, or access to personal data about children or young people, as part of their work; However, a police check is required, even if the role does not involve direct contact with children or access to personal data.

Risk and Compliance:

The role holder is required to carry out the duties in accordance with the SCI Fraud, Bribery, and Corruption policy and code of conduct. The key responsibilities include understanding and complying with the SCI policies and procedures, not committing any act of fraud, bribery, or corruption, understanding risks in their area/role, and implementing mitigation measures, report any suspected fraud, bribery, or corruption immediately, declare conflicts of interest in accordance with internal procedures and complete mandatory training related to ethics and anti-fraud measures

Note: Given that safeguarding and risk responsibilities are integral to all roles, the CO SG , Risk and Compliance team can be consulted for support in tailoring specific safeguarding/risk activities and roles.

ROLE PURPOSE:

  • The Driver is accountable for ensuring safe and efficient vehicle driving in or out of Addis Ababa and over the weekends providing transport services from different SCI program request centres to various destinations driving through off roads and under all weather conditions, taking responsibilities for passengers and vehicular equipment. Prepares and submit monthly vehicle usage report to his immediate supervisor; Keep up to date data on fuel consumption and other incidental costs. Use log sheet for the day-to-day movement and should be familiar with and adhere safety and security guidelines of Save the Children International.
  • Ensuring proper safety, security and handling of SCI fleets to the best interest of the organization and manage FO vehicle fleet in accordance to the operational needs and in compliance with the required standard procedures. The post holder will also be responsible for compiling all SCI vehicles maintenance trucker, follow up of maintenance and make report in a monthly base. In addition to this he/she will manage the inspection of rental vehicles and ensure the vehicles rented by SCI are up to the standards of SCI’s safety and security procedure regarding vehicles rented.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Operate Vehicle:

  • In a safe and efficient, manner to minimize the risk of loss or damage of SCI or third-party property. Always Receive the vehicle with its accessories through hand-over documents and signs same for receipt of vehicle with its accessories
  • Performs daily, weekly vehicle checks and maintains cleanness of trucks
  • Make sure passengers’ goods and materials are properly loaded and unloaded.
  • Uses the vehicle for Authorized purposes and ensures, also, that the assigned vehicle is not driven by another person unless authorized
  • Adhere to SCI Driving policies & procedures
  • Takes care of maintenance of SCI vehicles and their accessories. Undertakes minor maintenance works
  • Shows up maximum level of Preparedness /Readiness (Filling fuel, cleaning the vehicle & taking necessary action to ascertain the vehicle is always ready for driving.
  • Arriving & departing on time at work places and willingness to assist programs in the field
  • Ensures maximum care and control of the vehicle, always drives as per SCI speed limit, and respecting national legislations.
  • Follow up of safety procedures and precautions before & while driving SCI vehicle.
  • Keeping the necessary documents in the vehicle.
  • Keeping all equipment/tool in the vehicle and making sure it’s working
  • Maintains records of logbook for all journeys undertaken, safety of passengers, fuel consumed and other road costs and ensures the logbook is available for inspection at any time and does monthly reports to pool coordinator
  • Follow up and reports pending inspections, insurance renewal or any defects or problems.
  • Maintaining all safety and security measures to the vehicle under his/her care.
  • Ensuring that the vehicle assigned to him/her is clean, fueled, lubricated and regularly serviced as per schedule
  • Keep all tools and reserve tyre with due care. Handles the vehicle and other related accessories and materials with due care
  • Cleans all seat belts, the vehicle inside compartment each day and wears the same all times.
  • The driver should inspect it in a daily base, make minor repair, change tire etc…
  • Have the SCI logo visibly displayed on SCI vehicle, except where this would jeopardize staff safety or be inappropriate to specific local circumstances
  • Park in safe and secure areas all SCI vehicles during working and non-working hours. Parks the vehicle in safe place during night
  • Report accidents as occurred immediately
  • Adheres to rules and regulations of Save the Children International
  • Make liaising and logistical works when his line manager requests
  • Performs other related tasks as required

About You

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma or 10+3 Technical and vocational training in Automotive Technology/Maintenance.
  • Own at least third grade valid driving license or equivalent with new driving license

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Trained in Safety and Security
  • Training on 4WD and defensive driving training
  • At least 3 years of work experience in managing vehicle maintenance or work as a mechanic.
  • Willingness to work over weekends, holidays and harsh climatic situations.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills is an asset.
  • Experience in vehicle maintenance is an asset
  • Experience in Liaising/logistical activities is an added asset
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work effectively in difficult environments
  • Be able to communication in English, and understand English written texts
  • Commitment to SCI’s aims, values and principles.
