MSF Switzerland (MSFCH) is a humanitarian medical organization providing emergency medical aid to populations in need based in Dagahaley and Mombasa County.

The selected candidate will be reporting to the Medical Coordinator

Main Purpose

Supporting the Medical Coordinator through delegated tasks and responsibilities including administrative tasks related to the coordination of work, ensuring good relationships with local and national authorities and ensuring adequate program management in the projects, according to MSF protocols, (para)medical standards, rules of hygiene and the standard precautions in order to ensure the delivery of quality medical care for patients and their communities as well as to improve the health conditions of the targeted population

Accountabilities

  • Monitoring, supervising and evaluating the implementation of medical activities in the project, visiting projects according to preset schedule and participating in defining the human resources needs, materials and techniques. Assisting in the implementation of MSF protocols, (para) medical standards, the rules of hygiene and universal precautions in service.
  • Assisting in the collection of information on national health policy (meetings, reports, articles, etc.), collecting and participating in the analysis of epidemiological data (meetings, reports, articles, etc.) from the projects
  • Ensuring medical follow up of patients (treatment, improvement) in collaboration with the medical referent of the health structure and overseeing all medical expenses associated with the patient, in collaboration with the supervisors. Organize the administrative and medical information (reports, ongoing treatments), the discharge of patients and return to their homes
  • Supporting and supervising the project teams and participating in the management of the medical team in the capital (recruitment, training, monitoring their work, vacation planning, assessments, etc.). Participating in briefings and debriefings of the (para) medical team members and promoting communication and active participation in the development of the project
  • Applying the employee health policy and participating in the evaluation of hospital structures that can serve as reference structures for national and international staff. Participating in the medical monitoring of MSF personnel and overseeing all medical expenses associated with various consultations and hospitalizations in collaboration with the line manager
  • Participating in the management of the central pharmacy, advising and guiding the logistics team in the mission of drug stock management. Organizing the start-up, inventory and management of operational medical library according to the classification plan
  • Participating in the data collection and management from the projects as well as preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports and organizing · data archiving and medical reports in the project

    Performing other duties at the request of Medco (exceptional strengthening of a field team, involvement in evaluations, etc.)

  • Responsible for the active surveillance and monitoring of dieases of epidemic potential in the OCG Yalta and project locations and engage in follow up with MOH .
  • Is the focal person in Eprep repsonse in colloboration with the Medco and Dmedco and also has an active role in Exploratory Mission and responses .
  • Participates in the training needs of the projects and supports the field teams in planning and implementing the trainings according to the needs assessments .
  • Organize and plan departmental meeting in collaboration with Medco/DMedco
  • Carry out staff health briefing for the international staff and periodically update and assess health facilities .
  • Follow up of staff Health for international and national staff .
  • For national staff is the focal point for all medical insurance related topics .
  • Support the follow up of the operational research activities for the medical department.
  • Provide technical support to the projects on special areas such as NCD/HIV/HIM and Quality of Care implementer when necessary .
  • Is the the Mission focal person for MSF-Pead eCARE

    Requirements

Education

  • Medical Doctor diploma or equivalent in a related allied health.
  • Degree in epidemiology is an asset.

    Experience

  • Experience in epidemiology or operational research.
  • Training or experience in tropical medicine
  • Experience working in a developing country.
  • Emergency experience
  • Minimum 2 years experience

Languages

  • Excellent command of English. Swahili
  • Knowledge of Somali language is an asset.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
