JOB SUMMARY
The Midwife will assist medical staff in the care and treatment of patients in the Samaritan’s Purse program area. The Midwife will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of care as they help treat patients. The Midwife will support the MMU as well as provide support to recovering Health Centers, as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive midwifery care including prevention, screening, diagnosis, management, and referral of maternal and reproductive health conditions in accordance with SP and national guidelines.
- Apply clinical knowledge and skills to prevent, diagnose, and manage maternal, neonatal, and reproductive health conditions. Conduct consultations as needed and prescribe treatment in line with SP and government protocols.
- Follow up patients during the course of treatment through consultations and examinations, ensuring appropriate management, referral, or continuity of care in collaboration with clinical team members.
- Identify and manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies, including postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, sepsis, and obstructed labor, ensuring timely stabilization and referral to appropriate health facilities.
- Promote and facilitate access to reproductive health services, including antenatal (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) services within the MMU.
- Conduct follow-up of pregnant women to ensure continuity of antenatal care and early identification of high-risk pregnancies.
- Provide postnatal care visits for recently delivered women and their newborns to assess maternal and neonatal wellbeing, identify complications early, and ensure timely management, counseling, and referral as needed.
- Provide structured health education on antenatal care, safe delivery, newborn care, nutrition, family planning, and danger signs during pregnancy and postpartum period.
- Keep patients and families informed about diagnoses, treatment plans, and care processes, ensuring understanding and informed participation in care decisions.
- Ensure care and communication are culturally sensitive and appropriate.
- Screen for gender-based violence (GBV) and provide appropriate first-line support and referral in line with survivor-centered care principles.
- Work closely with clinical and protection staff to ensure identification and referral of vulnerable women and girls requiring additional support.
- Participate in accurate clinical documentation and collection of epidemiological and maternal health data, ensuring validity and completeness.
- Ensure completion and monitoring of MMU maternal and reproductive health quality indicators.
- Work closely with medical and health staff to identify pregnant women in need of ANC and postpartum women requiring PNC services
- Support clinical leadership in training and mentoring other staff and in dissemination of updated protocols and clinical guidelines.
- Carry out additional tasks and responsibilities with a generous and serving spirit for the benefit of Samaritan’s Purse.
- Degree in Midwifery from a recognized university.
- 4 -5 years’ experience in hospital or clinic setting, preferably in low-resource setting.
- Renewed license to practice

LANGUAGE
- Proficiency in English and Amharic
- Knowledge of the regional language required
- Knowledge of any other national language is a plus
