Background

IOM Ethiopia’s Migration Management Unit (MMU) implements a variety of programmes aimed at protecting migrants and improving migration management and governance in Ethiopia. It envisions a country where the Government of Ethiopia (GoE), cooperating partners, the UN and other key stakeholders manage migration in a manner that protects and empowers all categories of migrants. MMU works with the GoE, migrants and key stakeholders to uphold the rights and meet the needs of migrants and their communities and promote the benefits and address the challenges of migration through the following interventions.

Working at all stages of the migration process (pre-departure, departure, arrival, return), in close collaboration with the GoE, and guided by the principle of safe, orderly and humane migration, MMU works in the following programmes:

  • Protecting and Assisting Vulnerable Migrants
  • Optimizing the Developmental Potential of Migration
  • Regulating Migration for The Benefit of All

Under the overall supervision of the IOM Ethiopia Chief of Mission and Representative to the AU, IGAD and UNECA and the direct supervision of the Migration Management Programme Coordinator (MMPC), the incumbent shall be responsible for carrying out duties related to programme support, including reporting, follow-up on specific thematic components, coordination support, etc. In particular, s/he will be responsible for the following responsibilities:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

Migration Policy Support

  • Assist in formulating and implementing MMU’s support to the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) to develop a National Migration Policy;
  • Assist in conducting desk reviews and assessments on areas pertaining to migration policy development and migration trends;
  • Produce concise, targeted and timely research reports and communication materials (info/fact sheets, brochures, presentations, talking points, policy briefs, blogs, among others) for dissemination and/or use by the unit in its interactions with partners;
  • Provide logistical and technical support in organizing events including briefings and consultations in coordination with colleagues and the Migration Policy Technical Working Group (TWG).

UN Migration Network for Ethiopia (UNMNE)

  • Assist with the organization of periodic UNMNE meetings, draft meeting minutes and disseminate relevant documentation to Network members;
  • Assist in the development of work plans, terms of reference, policy briefs and other documents relevant to the work of the UNMNE;
  • Assist with collecting and compiling feedback from Network members.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • Master’s degree in international relations, political science, journalism, law, economics or related field from an accredited academic institution is required.

Experience

  • Prior experience working for an international organization, particularly on migration and refugee issues, would be an asset, though not required;
  • Familiarity with the work of NGOs and/or International Organizations would be a plus.

Languages

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Knowledge of one or several Ethiopian local languages would be an advantage
