MSF Switzerland (MSFCH) is a humanitarian medical organization providing emergency medical aid to populations in need based in Dagahaley and Mombasa County.

The objective of our project is to provide Access to health care for Adolescent and Youth Population (AYP), with specific focus on Young Key Populations (YKP) affected by social violence and health care exclusion. The selected candidate will be reporting technically to the Project Medical Referent (PMR)

The selected candidate will be reporting to the Project Medical Referent.

Main Purpose

The MSF Mombasa Project is conducting a multiyear mixed methods research study, which collects and analyses diverse forms of data (quantitative, qualitative) to enhance and evaluate the project’s impact on population health and well-being. This position will coordinate daily operations of all research activities and staff, working in close consultation with the principal investigators, medical team, and other collaborators.

Accountabilities:

  • Participating in defining the objectives of operational research, implementing research protocols, refining data collection tools, and ensuring participant recruitment and retention.
  • Coordinating the execution of the research with partners and in compliance to approved study protocols.
  • Providing training to and supervising the team implementing the research.
  • Lead data collection activities in coordination with the research team.
  • Ensuring the highest ethical standard is maintained, including that all participants have freely given their consent to participate and have received the correct information in a format they can comprehend.
  • Reviewing data collection and undertaking analysis as appropriate, reporting on a regular basis to the functional referent about study progress and any relevant information for the project and mission.
  • Support dissemination of study methods and results including through reports, presentations, papers, and other scientific output.
  • Managing data systems and ensuring accurate, high-quality datasets that adhere to the highest standards of security and confidentiality.
  • Support dissemination of findings as described in the study protocol, including to MSF teams and partners from government, academia, and community.
  • Support research planning and budgeting.
  • Provide administrative support to the study investigator group, including its principal investigators.
  • Propose and undertake analyses of study data.
  • Ensure the protection of rights, safety and welfare of study participants and staff.
  • Support and guide the research officers and, as necessary, other project staff to ensure adherence to study procedures, verification processess.
  • Collaborate with and support the research’s principal investigators (PIs) in preparation of timely submission of reportable events.
  • Ensure data is recorded, handled, stored and reported accurately and confidentiality is maintained.
  • Partcipate in the project’s meeting.

Requirements

Education

  • Higher degree (Bachelors or Masters) in epidemiology, medicine, public health, psychology, or some other similar field.

Experience

  • Essential experience coordinating or supporting research initiatives in health or the social sciences.
  • Essential experience leading a team, including people management and collaboration between partners.
  • Essential experience leading or supporting survey research.
  • Desirable experienced leading or supporting qualitative research.
  • Desirable experience on health topics pertaining to adolescents, young people, and/or key population.

Languages

  • English + Kiswahili essential.

Knowledge

  • Essential knowledge of research methods.
  • Essential knowledge of data management, including quality control and assurance.
  • Essential computer literacy (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Essential knowledge of statistical analysis package (e.g., Stata, R, SAS).
  • Desirable knowledge of survey platforms (e.g., Kobo, Qualtrics).

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
