SANCCOB seeks to employ a Preparedness and Response Manager to be based in Cape Town.
Report to: The Chief Executive Officer of SANCCOB
The Preparedness and Response Manager will be responsible for the management of SANCCOB’s oiled wildlife preparedness and response portfolio.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate the oiled wildlife response department at SANCCOB
- Ensure that SANCCOB is ready to respond to an oiled wildlife response both nationally and internationally
- Assist other environmental stakeholders and seabird management authorities with oiled wildlife preparedness and response
- Promote the development of oiled wildlife preparedness and response plans and source consultancy contracts from governments and/or the oil industry
- Develop oiled wildlife preparedness and response plans for SANCCOB and persons or companies who have contracted SANCCOB
- Ensure alignment of the oiled wildlife preparedness and response plans with the incident command system
- Develop and facilitate training and exercises for SANCCOB and persons or companies, who have contracted SANCCOB, to be able to respond to an oiled wildlife incident
- Facilitate the identification and purchase of oiled wildlife response equipment, and ensure the equipment is audited and serviced according to policy
- Develop and maintain a robust knowledge of relevant conservation legislation and the institutions and processes necessary for the effective implementation and enforcement of relevant laws and processes
- Remain up to date with oiled wildlife preparedness and response strategy, policy and legislation.
- Maintain and develop effective working relationships with key partners including NGOs, science and policy experts, government(s), oil industry, and shipping industry both nationally and internationally
- Assist with the organisation of events and conferences when required
- Write informative articles for SANCCOB and other media as may be required from time to time
- Supporting efforts to raise public awareness about oiled wildlife response through, for example, presenting at conferences or media interviews
- Where required, engage in fundraising support activities including developing concepts and proposals for funders and assist with activity reports
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in the environmental, conservation or environmental law field
- A post-graduate qualification in these fields will be an added advantage
- Minimum of five years working experience in the environmental, conservation or environmental law field
- Leadership capabilities
- Ability to develop high quality written content
- Ability to help lead response teams in an emergency situation
- Passion for seabirds and/or marine conservation, with a mission-driven work ethic and a positive attitude
- Ability to represent and promote SANCCOB at meetings, stakeholder working groups and public events
- Ability to work collaboratively within a small team but also to execute work independently and take the initiative when required
- Emotional intelligence, including strong interpersonal skills and self-awareness.
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Presentation and negotiation skills
- A strong command of English as a working language is essential, and a written and spoken capability in at least one other official South African language is preferred. French or Portuguese language skills are also desirable
- Valid Code 8 drivers licence
- Ability to travel independently nationally and internationally
