Lutheran World Federation (LWF) World Service (WS)

LWF World Service is the humanitarian and development arm of the Lutheran World Federation. We are a widely recognized, international, faith-based organization working in over twenty countries. We seek to bring people of all backgrounds together in the common quest for justice, peace, and reconciliation in an increasingly complex and fragmented world.

A commitment to the human rights of every individual, regardless of their status, guides our work, actions, and operations. We are particularly known for our timely, compassionate, and professional humanitarian work, and for our field presence in hard-to-reach areas. Our work is people-centred and community- based. Above all, we work with the most vulnerable, and in order to claim and uphold their rights, we engage proactively with local government and community structures.

Since 2007, when LWF established its work in Chad, it has been implementing humanitarian assistance and development programs in the provinces of Moyen Chari, Logone Orientale, Logone Occidentale, Chari Baguirmi, Lac, Ouaddaï, Sila, and in the city of N’Djamena. Intervention sectors cover food security, protection, climate change resilient livelihoods, water, hygiene and sanitation, nutrition, education, etc., in line with the 2025-2031 national strategy. Gender, inclusion, and diversity remain cross-cutting themes fully integrated into various interventions.

Our partners in Chad include related agencies and member churches (Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, CLWR, ELCW, ELCA, GNC), United Nations agencies such as UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP; governments (Canadian-GAC, Germany-GFFO), foundations, and other financial partners.

In view of the growing humanitarian response, the program plans to expand its area of intervention in the east, targeting the provinces of Wadi-Fira and Ennedi. However, a degree of flexibility will be maintained in line with the development of new needs in the country and the changing funding context.

Operations are coordinated from field offices, with a national coordination office in N’Djamena. To ensure quality implementation, LWF Chad is looking for a talented, competent, and committed Programme Coordinator to provide leadership, management, coordination, and constructive relationships with stakeholders. This is a senior position requiring effective diplomacy, analytical competencies, facilitation skills, and unquestionable integrity. Representation and networking skills are essential to fulfill this role. Fluency in French is a requirement for this position.

Purpose

The Programme Coordinator is responsible for the overall supervision of operations, ensuring the quality and development of the Chad program. The position holder will be based in N’Djamena with frequent travel to the various intervention areas of LWF.

This is a leadership role, and the incumbent will be part of the country program management team, promoting effective analysis, design, communication, and management of implementation teams, with a strong emphasis on accountability to people we serve, partners, and donors.

Required qualifications

A university degree in a field relevant to the humanitarian, development, social, or program management sector, or a university degree in a technical field related to LWF’s areas of intervention, with substantial experience in project/program coordination or management.

Comfortable with traveling within the country, sometimes to remote areas, to provide local support to staff and ensure the quality of operations.

Knowledge and experience of collaboration with UN agencies, government agencies, and development actors.

Experience in conducting advocacy at local and international levels.

Knowledge of LWF or an associated agency is an asset.

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF; German: Lutherischer Weltbund) is a global communion of national and regional Lutheran churches headquartered in the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. The federation was founded in the Swedish city of Lund in the aftermath of the Second World War in 1947 to coordinate the activities of the many differing Lutheran churches. Since 1984, the member churches are in pulpit and altar fellowship, with common doctrine as the basis of membership and mission activity.

The LWF now has 144 member church bodies in 79 countries representing over 72 million Lutherans. The LWF acts on behalf of its member churches in areas of common interest such as ecumenical and interfaith relations, theology, humanitarian assistance, human rights, communication, and the various aspects of mission and development work.

The Department for World Service is the LWF's humanitarian arm. It has programmes in 32 countries. The LWF is a member of ACT Alliance.

On October 31, 1999, in Augsburg, Germany, the Lutheran World Federation signed the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification with the Roman Catholic Church. The statement is an attempt to narrow the theological divide between the two faiths. The Declaration also states that the mutual condemnations between 16th-century Lutherans and the Roman Catholic Church no longer apply. A similar event took place in Lund Cathedral at the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation when Pope Francis visited Scania, Sweden's southernmost province that originally was Danish

The federation was organized at Lund, Sweden, in 1947. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, it replaced the more informal Lutheran World Convention, which had been founded in 1924. The goal was to coordinate international activities of the many Lutheran churches, to provide a forum for discussions on theological and organizational issues, and to assist in philanthropy, missionary activity, and exchange of students and professors. A key leader was Executive Secretary Sylvester C. Michelfelder (1889–1951), representing the American Lutheran Church. He had been a leader in organizing $45 million in American help for the rebuilding of Protestant churches in Germany after 1945. By the time of his death in 1951, the federation represented 52 churches in 25 countries.
