The South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) is a nonprofit organisation working with children and youth at key points in their education, including pre-school, primary, high school, post matric and tertiary.

SAEP seeks to appoint a Programme Coordinator for our post-matric programmes Bridging Year and Tertiary Support, to be based in Mowbray, Cape Town.

Responsibilities:

Coordination of Bridging Year (BY) programme for 60 post-matric students to prepare them for tertiary study

  • Delegate tasks to team members, and oversee day-to-day running of the programme
  • Work with the team and provide support as may be necessary to ensure the success of the programme implementation
  • Monitor student progress and compliance as per agreement, and administer any disciplinary action when necessary
  • Ensure that every student in the programme is able to successfully apply for their planned matric-rewrite
  • Drive the career guidance assessments, and work with the team to ensure that each student is aptly advised on the appropriate tertiary course to take in university or college
  • Ensure good communication with each beneficiary so that issues or challenges can be proactively addressed
  • Plan the recruitment, selection and orientation process of new set of student

Oversee the Tertiary Support (TS) programme

  • Work closely with the lead tertiary student support staff member in overseeing the progress of tertiary student beneficiaries (who have come through our BY programme)
  • Monitor the paired mentorship programme of each student and ensure that each beneficiary is receiving positive and appropriate study/ career-guidance mentorship
  • Conduct campus visits to engage with the beneficiaries
  • Assist student beneficiaries to help them overcome challenges that affect their studies and well-being
  • Ensure good communication with each beneficiary so that issues or challenges can be proactively addressed
  • Develop a network of appropriate resources, institutions, companies/corporates to help tertiary students with their studies, career development and job opportunities

Facilitation of Academic Literacy and Critical Thinking classes

  • Facilitate Academic Literacy and Critical Thinking classes
  • Develop stimulating and thought provoking lesson plans to prepare students for tertiary level learning

Planning, administration and reporting

  • Ensure that programme goals are implemented and achieved according to plan
  • Take lead in planning of the curriculum, lesson plans, activities, log-frames, surveys, communication strategy, logistics, budget allocation for both programmes
  • Coordinate all activities, events, workshops, excursions, campus visits, parent/guardian meetings, etc. including classroom resources, logistics and venues
  • Collect the students’ academic results per assessment period, and ensure that they are recorded in the central database and cloud-based application
  • Prepare relevant programme reports, and organisational reports such as risk register
  • Implement (or develop) policies and procedures within the programmes
  • Participate in the recruiting of complementary/supplementary team members
  • Contribute to fundraising related documentation and reporting

Communication and Liaison

  • Liaise with team and other staff members, management, students, parents/guardians
  • Network and collaborate with academic partners and service providers such as universities and colleges
  • Liaise with social worker or other resources for intervention where necessary

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification relevant to the requirements of the post
  • Ability to develop appropriate lesson plans within the broad curriculum
  • Awareness of trends and global issues and general knowledge
  • Minimum three to five years in coordinating experience or similar capacity
  • Experience in teaching, facilitating and working with post-matric students
  • Solid English communication skills (isiXhosa is a great plus)
  • Proficient computer skills, i.e. Microsoft applications (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Proficient in digital applications such as Google and social media apps
  • Knowledge in cloud-based database, e.g. Salesforce, an advantage
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Driver’s licence
  • Strong work ethic, disciplined, effective planner and time management skills
  • Engaging, positive spirit, people skills, collaborator and relationship builder
  • Pleasant working attitude, networker, good in public speaking and an effective communicator
