Overview
WUSC – World University Service of Canada – is a leading Canadian non-profit organization in international development, committed to providing education, employment and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged youth around the world. WUSC is working in partnership with Windle International Kenya (WIK) to implement the Kenya Equity in Education Project (KEEP-II), which operates from April 2017 to March 2022.
The World University Service of Canada seeks an experienced, dynamic individual to support coordination of its education programmes in Kenya. The current portfolio focuses largely on girls’ education, and includes:
- The Kenya Equity in Education Project (KEEP)funded via DFID’s Girls Education Challenge,
- The Strengthening inclusive learning environments (Shule) Project, funded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, and
- The Humanitarian Education Accelerator, funded by UNHCR’s innovation fund.
General Duties
The Program Officer (PO) will play an important role to support the implementation of WUSC Kenya’s programmes in Kenya primarily from an overall project management perspective. The PO will be a core member of the programmes team, working closely with the Education Programme Manager, the Education Advisor, WUSC M&E team, colleagues in the field and WUSC local partners.
Below are some of the key responsibilities of the Programme Officer:
- Day to day coordination across programmes;
- Support project teams on the technical direction and implementation of projects including preparation of inception plans and annual workplans;
- Participate in the effective management of relationship with WUSC partners,
- In conjunction with the M&E team, provide technical guidance for M&E to the partners and other stakeholders;
- Work with the WUSC Kenya Financial Team to monitor budgets and provide financial analysis; and
- General project administration
- Alongside our M&E team support a results monitoring system for projects which enable regular monitoring of progress toward results
- Ensure that project feedback, results and lessons learnt are effectively fed back to inform adjustments and improvements in project approaches, and delivery.
- Support the preparation and timely submission of program technical reports, which capture results and lessons learned;
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- A Degree or equivalent in social sciences, international development or a related field required;
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in donor-funded project management; expereince with a range of institutional donors is preferred.
- Experience in the education sector, and specifically on girls’ education or refugee education projects, is essential
- Knowledge of WUSC’s programming areas (Turkana and Garissa counties; Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps).
- Knowledge of child protection and safeguarding, and best practices in girls’ education projects;
- Experience with education in refugee settings is an asset
- Experience with gender equity programming is an asset
Competencies:
- Proven ability to work productively with a variety of stakeholders with an emphasis on producing quality products;
- Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships, network, and communication are essential;
- Proven technical, financial, administrative and organizational skills
- Complete fluency in English is essential,
- Ability to write articulately and cogently, and to edit at a similarly high level
- Strong communication, mentoring and team building skills, all applicable in a multi-cultural work environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, Internet and email.
- Commitment to organizational goals and functions of WUSC, both locally and internationally.
