Background

Interpeace is an international organization for peacebuilding that supports locally led peacebuilding initiatives around the world. Interpeace tailors its approach to each society and ensures that the work is locally driven. Together with local partners and local teams, Interpeace jointly develops peacebuilding programmes and helps establish processes of change that connect local communities, civil society, government and the international community. As a strategic partner of the United Nations, Interpeace is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and has offices around the world. For more information about Interpeace, please visit www.interpeace.org

Through its Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia programmes, and in partnership with local organisations, Interpeace is implementing the project “Weaving Peace Across Generations and Borders: inclusive, community-driven pathways to prevent and counter violent extremism and to strengthen peace, resilience and stability in the Mandera Triangle and fragile counties of Kenya”.

The project pursues four outcomes:

  • Outcome 1: youth and communities in cross-border areas of the Mandera Triangle are more resilient to violent extremism.
  • Outcome 2: inclusive and trusted community-based mechanisms prevent, detect early and peacefully resolve conflicts within and across borders.
  • Outcome 3: cross-border actors put in place measures for safer, better-coordinated and more predictable trade and human mobility.
  • Outcome 4: households and institutions adopt climate-resilient, conflict-sensitive natural-resource-management and livelihood practices

The organization is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. About Us

Interpeace is an independent, international peacebuilding organization. We were initially established in 1994 by the United Nations to develop innovative solutions to build peace. We have a proven and recognized approach to enable people to build lasting peace.

History shows us that peace is possible. From more than 20 years of experience in peacebuilding, we know that peace cannot be imported from the outside and must be built from within a society. This is why Interpeace tailors its approach to each society and ensures that the work is locally driven. Interpeace believes that every society has what it needs to build peace. Our role is to support societies to harness their strengths. Together with local partners, we jointly develop peacebuilding programmes. We help establish processes of change that connect local communities, civil society, government and the international community through our Track 6 approach.

The origins of Interpeace date back to 1994, when the United Nations conducted a peacebuilding pilot project, called the 'War-torn Societies' project. The project then transitioned to become an independent non-profit organization in 2000 now named Interpeace. Interpeace still has a strategic partnership with the United Nations. It can operate as either an independent NGO or as a United Nations initiative
