Background of ERCS

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) Oromia Regional Branch invites qualified applicants for the following vacant position. ERCS has been operating in Ethiopia since July 8, 1935, working in humanitarian and development interventions. It is an auxiliary to the government, working with partners such as IFRC, ICRC, and various National Societies.

Position Details

  • Job Title: Project Accountant
  • Project: EC2R Project
  • Work Unit: Zonal Branch
  • Reports to: Zonal Branch head/ Admin.& Finance head
  • Place of Work:, East Borena & East Bale zonal branch office
  • Salary: Negotiable
  • Terms of Employment: 1 year with possibility of extension based on availability of fund and performance
  • Number of required:- 2 (two) one for east Bale, one for East Borena & Guji

Job Summary

The Accountant closely follows up the timely collection of receivables and payment of payables and makes sure that all receivables are payables are fully cleared at the end of every month and no balance is carried forward, verifies that closings and auditing of books of accounts are carried out in due course. She/he should follow up the entry of project transactions in accordance with the accounting system and the preparation and communication of project financial reports as per commitments made with FCDO as a donor and pertinent financial policies and procedures of the ERCS. She/he ensures that the ERCS’ books of accounts are reconciled with bank statements, ascertains that closings of books of project accounts are carried out in due course, makes sure that no receivables and payables are outstanding at the end of the year, and arranges and organizes financial documents for auditing by internal and external auditors.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Checks payment requests against adequate budget coverage and verifies correctness of arithmetic accuracy for approval
  2. Follows up the budget and the project budget execution;
  3. Examines and checks all registers for correctness and the register totals for general ledger posting;
  4. Prepares Monthly Income and Expenditure, Fund status and Budget VS expenditure report and Bank reconciliation
  5. Verifies that closings and auditing of books of accounts are carried out in due course;
  6. Ensures that the ERCS’ accounting documents are properly organized;
  7. Facilitates and follows up the preparation and communication of project financial reports as per commitments made with funding agents and pertinent financial policies and procedures of the ERCS;
  8. Follows up and facilitates the timely delivery of reports from branches;
  9. Arranges and organizes financial documents for auditing by internal and external auditors;
  10. Make sure that no receivables and payables are outstanding at the end of the year;
  11. Performs other related duties and responsibilities of the work unit as assigned by the Accounts Manager.
About You

Job Requirements

Education

  • Second/First degree in Accounting/ Accounting & Finance/ & Accounting Software.

Experience

  • 6 to 8 years of relevant work experience,
  • Previous Red Cross experience in volunteerism is an advantage.

Skills & Competencies.

  • Proficiency in English language (written and oral).
  • Working experience with FCDO-funded projects is a strong asset.
  • Commitment to Ethiopian Red Cross values and ethical standards.
  • Strong Excel knowledge
  • Different data base knowledge and operation such us SAP, Peachtree etc. is additional advantages
