WHO WE ARE

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

THE PURPOSE

Under the supervision of Humanitarian Affairs Advisor, the Project Officer is responsible for following up on specific tasks linked to Health Care in Danger (HCID) programme. The Health Care in Danger (HCID) is an initiative of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement aimed at addressing the issue of violence against patients, health workers, facilities, and vehicles, and ensuring safe access to and delivery of health care in armed conflict and other emergencies.

YOUR ROLE

  • Mobilization and support to Nigerian Red Cross Society at the HQs and grassroots level with selected branches for HCiD awareness and data gathering.
  • Support to ICRC’s field offices in following up on elements of HCiD programme.
  • Policy and Humanitarian Diplomacy by engaging with stakeholders on laws and policies linked to HCiD.
  • Evidence Gathering of HCiD Incidents
  • Carry out sensitization sessions on HCiD topics for selected audience.
  • Implementing evidence-based initiatives.
  • University Degree in Social Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a comparable role with a reputed humanitarian organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Protection issues and multi-disciplinary aspects of the HCiD highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of applicable legal and policy frameworks linked to HCiD.
  • Experience in engaging with medical, security, political, humanitarian, and civil society actors.
  • Advance knowledge of written and spoken English, Hausa and other regional languages of North-East Nigeria desirable
  • Applicant must have a valid working permit to work in Nigeria.

YOUR PROFILE: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • University Degree in Social Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a comparable role with a reputed humanitarian organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Protection issues and multi-disciplinary aspects of the HCiD highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of applicable legal and policy frameworks linked to HCiD.
  • Experience in engaging with medical, security, political, humanitarian, and civil society actors.
  • Advance knowledge of written and spoken English, Hausa and other regional languages of North-East Nigeria desirable
  • Applicant must have a valid working permit to work in Nigeria.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian institution based in Geneva, Switzerland and a three-time Nobel Prize Laureate. State parties (signatories) to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977 (Protocol I, Protocol II) and 2005 have given the ICRC a mandate to protect victims of international and internal armed conflicts. Since its creation in 1863, the ICRC's sole objective has been to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and strife. It does so through its direct action around the world, as well as by encouraging the development of international humanitarian law (IHL) and promoting respect for it by governments and all weapon bearers. Its story is about the development of humanitarian action, the Geneva Conventions and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
