HelpAge International is responding to the protection needs of conflict and drought affected internally displaced persons (IDPs) in four Woredas of Oromia region through facilitating protection monitoring and capacity building support by mobile protection teams, establishing children and women spaces in IDP sites, and providing capacity building support on gender, age and disability mainstreaming for agencies granted under EHF scheme.

Summary of the Role

Psychosocial officer will ensure quality of GBV and child protection case management service and psychosocial support to survivors of GBV, adhere GBV guiding principle and follow survivor’s centered-approach. The Psychosocial Officer will work to promote multi-sectoral service; health, safety, psychosocial support and justice (where feasible) by supporting referral networks that enhance a survivor’s ability to receive confidential, safe, and timely services that meets their needs and their best interest in IDPs in Borana zone, including supervision and capacity building of Social Workers, support program coordinator with other Government and INGO partners, and oversee the empowerment activities with women and girls.

Specific Responsibilities      

  • Supervise and capacitate social and community workers formally and informally to provide quality case management services; including age-appropriate specialized support and care for adult women, adolescent and girl child survivors through training, daily mentor, weekly meeting, applying quarterly case workers knowledge and skills assessment tools.
  • Ensure proper and safe documentation of reported GBV incidences through utilization of consent, case intake, action plan, follow up plan, client satisfaction tool and other case management forms accurately and appropriately, strictly follow data protection protocol and confidentiality.
  • Build a relationship with relevant GBV program stakeholders and conduct mentoring sessions to service providers (health, legal, protection, psychosocial) in the IDP locations and in the local community to encourage greater communication, collaboration and coordination among partners from protection, health, legal, and psychosocial support
  • Work with stakeholders to implement GBV standard operating procedures, and monitor referral pathway to ensure survivor’s ability to receive confidential, safe, and timely services that meets their needs.
  • Coordinate meeting only with service provider involved in its case assistance; actively participate in coordination meetings
  • Enhance participation of Women and Girls in the safety centers and conduct regular review meetings with women and girls
  • Prepare and produce IEC and BCC materials, in collaboration with GBV team, ensuring messages are appropriate for the community and conduct pre-testing before dissemination
  • Provide prevention and response related trainings for social workers, community leaders, etc.
  • Develop monthly and weekly activity plans for social workers
  • Develop reports and submit to project coordinator

Length of Contract:  6 months 

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • First Degree in Gender studies, Social work, Sociology, psychology, law and related fields of study
  • Relevant work experience of minimum 5 years in humanitarian response projects focusing on General protection, child protection, GBV and gender mainstreaming
  • Interpersonal skills and effective communication and cultural sensitivity and social respect for differences in beliefs, values and perceptions of the refugees,
  • Direct working experience with persons with special needs,
  • Experience in NGO setting is an advantage,
  • Commendable facilitation and negotiation  skills,
  • Excellent analytical, documentation,  report writing skills
  • Preferably Knowledge of Oromifa Language.
