About the Job

The Radio Operator facilitates telecommunication and radio messaging, makes constant follow ups on all field trips as per the internal procedures. The incumbent supports the information flow on all security related issues.

This a national/resident position based in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance on the telecommunication transmission guidelines.
  • Operates all equipment for Voice (Tel, VHF, HF) and for Data communication (Lotus Notes)
  • Identifies the most efficient mean of communication (inside and outside ICRC), taking in account format(electronic or paper), speed and price.
  • Conducts thorough periodic inspection of the Radio Rooms equipment and performs routine tests to ensure that operations standards are met.
  • Checks content of messages and necessary signatures and transmits messages that are short, clear, and understandable
  • Maintains the inventory of Sat-phones, portable radios, or other IT equipment in the radio-room.
  • Facilitates radio and telecommunication contacts and ensures Radio operation permanence in the respective sub-
  • delegations and maintains a notion of emergency operations and always in contact with the hierarchy in case of
  • unclear situations.
  • Ensures that the field trip forms are correctly filled, approved, and informs concerned Sub-delegations about
  • planned trips.
  • Follows up all the field movements as per the field trip guidelines and shares daily field movement information with the relevant office.
  • Adheres to the international and national radio procedures when contacting other stations.

Minimum qualifications and required competencies

  • Diploma preferably in Information Technology or vocational training in electronics, telecommunication, or related field of study
  • 2 years of experience as a radio operator or a related field of activity
  • Proactive with good planning, organizational, coordination and communication skills
  • Flexible and adapts easily in high pressure situations.
  • Details oriented and upholds high level of confidentiality.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Good knowledge of political, economic, social, and cultural environment of Somalia

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian institution based in Geneva, Switzerland and a three-time Nobel Prize Laureate. State parties (signatories) to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977 (Protocol I, Protocol II) and 2005 have given the ICRC a mandate to protect victims of international and internal armed conflicts.
