Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella network organization representing Fairtrade certified producers and workers in Africa. It has four (4) regional networks – Eastern Africa; Southern Africa; West Africa; and the Middle East and North Africa. Established in 2005, FTA aims to effectively represent producers and workers within the International Fairtrade system and provide services to them that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods. The FTA Board directs the policy and strategic development of the organization.

ABOUT THE JOB

Dignity for All (D4A) Programme – (Fairtrade Africa and Fairtrade Finland Partnership Programme)

This is a four-year initiative funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Finland with additional match-fund from Commercial Partners including Gustav Paulig, Aldi UK, Aldi Switzerland and National Fairtrade Organizations e.g Fairtrade Finland, Fairtrade Sweden, Fairtrade UK, Max-Havelaar Switzerland. Underpinned by the Fairtrade Theory of Change (ToC), the D4A Impact Programme seeks Justice and fairness by supporting rights and freedoms of farmers and workers; Empowerment through strengthening the assets and capabilities of most marginalized smallholder farmers and workers; Attainment of sustainable livelihoods by building resilient agro-based trade systems and societies.

The programme aims at capturing and assessing simultaneous change in four areas (spheres of change): Small producer & worker organizations; Supply chain business practices; Consumer behavior and Civil society action. It has three cross-cutting objectives of gender equality, the inclusion of vulnerable persons and environmental sustainability.

Fairtrade Africa’s D4A Programme currently has 7 individual projects being implemented in Ghana, Ethiopia, Malawi and South Africa in Banana, Flowers, Wine, Tea, Coffee and Cocoa value chains. Following additional funding support from Commercial partner, Aldi supermarket in Switzerland (Aldi-Suisse), Fairtrade Africa will be expanding D4A Programme to include a new Flower Project in Kenya starting January 2021 hence the need to recruit a senior project officer to manage this exciting initiative.

ABOUT THE ROLE

To lead the implementation of Fairtrade Africa’s D4A Flowers Project in Kenya aimed at directly empowering at least 5,000 workers and 20,000 indirect beneficiaries within Fairtrade Certified Flower farms (Hired-Labor Producer Organizations) with identified socio-economic interventions of clean energy, environmental protection, women and youth empowerment through the adoption of energy-saving cookstoves, sale of carbon credits and briquette production.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management

· Establish a business case for the D4A Flower project, supported by budget information and income projections per FTA and Fairtrade Finland’s project management toolkit and templates

· Manage implementation of D4A Flowers project as per the approved proposal, work plan and budget

· Monitor operational activities and effectiveness of results and milestones

· Compile monthly updates and quarterly reports using FTA and Fairtrade Finland’s project

· Support the development of project concept notes and proposals

Technical Support

· Provide thematic and technical support to target right-holders within the 8 Flower farms in relation to:

o Deforestation and Climate change

o Socio-economic and health effects resulting from over-reliance on kerosene, charcoal and wood fuel as main sources of cooking energy

o Business development skills/Enterprise development in relation to the production of energy-saving cook-stoves and briquettes using locally-available material

o Inclusion of vulnerable persons i.e women, youth, persons with disabilities

o Carbon Credits and Gold Standard Product certification process

Producer Organizational Strengthening

· Identify producer needs and develops a relevant support plan with reference to FTA’s Strategy, Fairtrade Standards, Project plan and Donor requirements

· Ensure project right holders’ awareness of opportunities, risks and relevant sector players including risk management and potential opportunities

· Provide support to target flower farms aimed at enhancing the visibility of certification benefits/impact towards enhancing market opportunities for Fairtrade-certified Flowers

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

· Closely monitor implementation progress of D4A Flower project and propose strategies for continuous improvement

· In close collaboration with D4A Programme MEL Manager, lead project monitoring, evaluation and learning processes

· Submit high-quality narrative and financial reports in accordance with FTA, Fairtrade Finland and D4A Flower project donor requirements (monthly, quarterly and annually)

· Provide information and data on a timely basis

· Establish and maintain a database of all project documents

Partnership, Advocacy & Resource Mobilization

· Initiate and maintain strategic relationships with FTA Stakeholders i.e. target project right holders, local communities, public, private institutions, civil society organizations, educational/research institutions, etc

· Support advocacy efforts at county, national and regional levels

· Support development of quality communication material to enhance the project, FTA and donor visibility

· Supports media visits

· Identify policy gaps and respective interventions to address these

· Support resource mobilization efforts

Represent FTA in external event

SKILLS REQUIRED

Academic Qualifications

· Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g Agriculture, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Project Management etc.)

Experience and Knowledge

· A minimum of 5 years’ project management experience in a development NGO

· Additional experience on climate change, energy-saving cook-stoves and carbon-credits related project highly desired

· Experience in delivering training to a wide range of audience

· Experience in business development within sustainable supply chains

· Knowledge and understanding of Ethical certification standards e.g. Fairtrade

· Knowledge and experience in Hired Labor Producer Organizations will be an added advantage e.g. Flower Farms

Skills

· Strong planning and project management skills

· Good command of spoken and written English

· Ability to speak fluently in Swahili

· Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with individuals across multi-functional disciplines

· Conflict resolution skills

· Good organizational skills

· Good training and facilitation skills

We work through primary structures such as product groups, country partnerships and regional networks which enable members to have a strong voice in the governance and management of the organisation.
