The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral, and independent organisation with the exclusively humanitarian mission to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening International Humanitarian Law and universal humanitarian principles. The ICRC’s Regional Delegation in Nairobi co-ordinates the institution’s humanitarian activities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Djibouti.

Overall Responsibility

The Regional Digital Officer leads efforts to deliver compelling and engaging content (proactively and reactively) through the direct management of the regional social media channels and the website. The incumbent provides guidance and support to staff at all levels of the organization on social media use and produces reports on content performance, particularly at times of crisis. They identify social media trends and applies them appropriately in-house, creating and adapting best practice accordingly.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Head of Regional Communication Centre (RCC), is in charge of the ICRC online platforms for Africa (website and social media)
  • Ensures accurate, timely and effective delivery of digital content, optimized for search and audience engagement, partnering with Audio-visual Producers, social media leads, web editors and Digital Officers primarily at the regional level.
  • Creates, edits, repurposes rich social media content, like posts and tweets, image slideshows, threads, gifs and video, with a clearly developed narrative and tone of voice.
  • Manages official ICRC social media accounts, posting content and responding to comments and direct messages in an appropriate fashion.
  • Uses a variety of analytics tools (e.g. Facebook Business Manager, Sprinklr), to identify and understand social media audiences and behavioral trends.
  • Designs and runs complex social media campaigns -defining strategy and metrics, developing content, reaching out to social media influencers, and reporting on outcomes.
  • Provides in-depth social media guidance on setting up a strategy managing and mitigating risks, growing an engaged community, influencing audiences and effecting behavioral change.
  • Provides social media training to colleagues (including senior staff members) and peers on how to use social media channels and measure impact.
  • Defines online strategies and content according to institutional guidelines, in order to reinforce the visibility of the ICRC in Africa.
  • Support delegations in English-speaking countries in Africa for all online communication related needs.
  • Provide SEO guidance for regional and delegations’ content.
  • Develop Info as aid content together with delegations for use across platforms and provide guidance on best practices.
  • Be the face of the ICRC for tailored digital content.
  • Building the online network: in collaboration with the African delegations and the Digital Officer in the Dakar RCC the Digital Officer defines and implements engagement strategies for the social media platforms.
  • Engaging with the online audience: in coordination with the Global team, Head of RCC and the concerned delegations, the Digital Officer replies to comments and questions received on ICRC social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter etc.).
  • Participates in weekly, quarterly, biannual and ad-hoc reports.
  • Contribute to the analysis of the security, socio-economic, cultural and political environment relevant to the ICRC and shares relevant information with colleagues.

Minimum Requirements and competencies

  • University education in Communication or related field such as news media or journalism.
  • Minimum 6 – 9 years’ overall professional experience.
  • 5 years’ experience in digital communication.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is a must; French or/and other languages is an asset.
  • Strong communication and writing/editing skills.
  • Capacity to analyse the political and social environment.
  • Proficient in utilizing computer software, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good knowledge of online design, content editing, social media monitoring and management tools (Asana, Canva, Sprinklr)
  • Very good knowledge of Drupal Content Management System.
  • Good knowledge of Google analytics.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian institution based in Geneva, Switzerland and a three-time Nobel Prize Laureate. State parties (signatories) to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977 (Protocol I, Protocol II) and 2005 have given the ICRC a mandate to protect victims of international and internal armed conflicts.
