Position: Research Assistant (Data collection and digital reporting)

Background Information
CISP – Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli (International Committee for the Development of Peoples) is a rights-based international NGO established in 1983 in Rome. CISP implements humanitarian, rehabilitation, and development projects through cooperation with public and private local actors in over 30 countries globally. Since 1997 CISP has been working in Kenya to carry out projects in areas of development by supporting national and county authorities to provide quality, equitable, transparent, and accountable services in various sectors. Over the past 23 years, CISP Kenya has expanded its activities across more than 12 Counties in both rural and urban areas in various sectors of intervention, including Agriculture and Food Security, Conservation, Livelihoods, Health and Nutrition, Protection (children, refugees, GBV), Education (early childhood, university), Governance, and Arts and Culture.
CISP is currently implementing a 1-year project titled “Capacity building of CSOs in selected ESAR countries on social norms programming and measurement on harmful practices and sexual and gender based violence” in Migori and Samburu Counties, with support from UNICEF. The project implemented jointly with Johns Hopkins University. This project examines knowledge, personal beliefs, and social norms around harmful practices of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage (CM) in Samburu East, Kuria East, and Kuria West Kenya. The measure will establish a baseline before new programming to change harmful social norms begins.
The aim of this study is to measure community members’ knowledge, personal beliefs, and social norms towards FGM, CM, and gender equality in Samburu East, Kuria East, and Kuria West, Kenya.
1. The objective of the collaboration
CISP is recruiting 12 Research Assistants (RAs), (4 from Samburu East Sub-county, 4 from Kuria East, and 4 from Kuria West Sub-counties) to support data collection to be done in September and October 2022 in the respective counties. CISP will seek gender balance in the selection of the RAs.
The RAs will receive ad-hoc one-week training in Nairobi, take part in inception meetings, the pilot testing of the data collection tools, and conduct the data collection in their respective sub-counties.
The study will apply a quantitative approach including eligible community sampled participants including men and women aged 15 years and older using structured interview questionnaires on ‘kobo collect’ and key informant interviews with selected stakeholders with open-ended questions.
The main tasks of the RAs will include:
✓ Conducting community quantitative data collection and KIIs with relevant stakeholders and ensuring that all COVID-19 protocols as per CISP Kenya SOPs and MoH Directives are observed.
✓ Report comprehensive findings through digitized forms.
2. Payment
The Research Assistant (RA) will be paid a daily stipend based on completed interviews, which will be paid after completing all the assigned tasks.
3. Transport and accommodation
CISP will provide transport for the recruited RAs to the training and meetings and during fieldwork within Migori and Samburu counties. CISP will provide accommodation and MEALS to the RAs when and where needed including during the training in Nairobi.
4. Eligibility Requirements:
1. Atleast a diploma in health, social or development subjects
2. Experience in quantitative and qualitative data collection and in research activities involving communities
3. Interest and ability to work with different stakeholders (community members, children, civil society, government officials, etc.)
4. Available during September and October 2022 (exact timeline to be confirmed)
5. Must be from the target sub-counties (Kuria east, Kuria West or Samburu east Sub-counties)
6. Proficient user of Microsoft Office package
7. Good communication skills in English, Swahili, and the local language of the target sub-counties
8. Able to work independently and in a team and respect deadlines
9. Ready to travel to Nairobi for one-week training.
