Helen Keller is an international Non-Profit Organization currently working in 14 countries in Africa, Kenya included. Helen Keller Intl was co-founded by Helen Keller. The organization is guided by her fierce optimism and belief in human potential. Since 1915, the organization has delivered life-changing programs that are proven and science-based targeting vulnerable families in places where the need is great but access to care is limited. We understand the unique challenges and opportunities each county faces, and we tailor our programs to provide actionable recommendations for improved health outcomes.

Helen Keller in partnership with Vitamin Angels and IDE are implementing “Transforming Lives through Nutrition” initiative across 12 countries aimed to improve maternal and child health through the delivery of evidence-based nutrition interventions and strengthening health and food systems at scale by putting women and children at the centre. A key component of the Transforming Lives Initiative is the Gender Responsive Health Services Project that comprises of a two- year three country (Cambodia, Kenya, and Senegal) research study.

Helen Keller is currently recruiting a Research intern for six months to support data collection activities in Ganze, Magarini and Kaloleni sub counties.

Only candidates currently residing in Kilifi County, preferably from Ganze, Kaloleni, or Magarini, will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support data collection including facilitation of Action Committees, Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant interviews.
  • Capturing accurate field notes and expanding notes daily in a timely manner and submission to the Research Manager for review
  • Adhere to all data collection protocols to ensure accuracy of data
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards, handling sensitive information with care.
  • Attend daily debrief meetings with the research team
  • Safely store and manage equipment (tape recorders)

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Have a Diploma in Gender and Development Studies, Community Development, Sociology, Public Health, Nutrition, Epidemiology, Statistics or a related field. (Degree will be an added advantage)
  • Demonstrated prior experience in conducting qualitative data collection
  • Currently a resident of Kilifi County, preferably from Ganze, Kaloleni, or Magarini sub counties.
  • Familiar with the local communities, understanding and respecting local customs and norms.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate fluently in Kiswahili and local language relevant to the study implementation sites
  • Attention to detail, ensuring accurate and consistent data recording
  • Ability to work longer hours and sometimes over the weekends if required.
  • Be able to adhere to Helen Keller Safeguarding policies

Helen Keller International (HKI) combats the causes and consequences of blindness and malnutrition by establishing programs based on evidence and research in vision, health and nutrition. Founded in 1915 by Helen Keller and George A. Kessler, the organization’s mission is to save the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

George A. Kessler, also known as the "Champagne King," was a passenger on the RMS Lusitania in 1915 when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat. When he was fighting for his life in the cold waters of the Atlantic off the coast of Ireland, he vowed that if he survived, he would devote much of his time and substantial financial resources to a worthwhile cause. The cause he chose was assisting Allied soldiers blinded in the service. He later befriended Helen Keller and helped found the organization that became Helen Keller International.HKI’s two major areas of expertise are Eye Health and Nutrition. Its Eye Health programs address the major causes of blindness in the world, including cataract, trachoma and onchocerciasis, and treating refractive error. Its nutrition programs include vitamin A, iron/folate, and multi-micronutrient supplementation, fortification of commonly used foods, dietary diversification, community- and school-gardening as well as school health activities, the promotion of breastfeeding and complementary feeding, and nutritional surveillance to provide critical data to governments and other development partners. Each year, HKI's programs benefit millions of people.Currently, HKI works in 22 countries around the world in Africa, Asia and the United States. Global headquarters are located in New York City, and programs are also developed and administered through regional offices, currently located in Senegal and Phnom Penh, as well as through 19 country offices and an additional development office in Paris.
