KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation

KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against tuberculosis (TB), still the deadliest infectious disease in the world. KNCV is an international center of expertise for TB control that promotes effective, efficient, innovative and sustainable tuberculosis control strategies in a national and international context. We are an organization of passionate TB professionals, including doctors, researchers, training experts, nurses and epidemiologists. We aim to stop the spread of the worldwide epidemic of TB and to prevent the further spread of drug-resistant TB.

ASCENT Project Background:

The Unitaid-funded ASCENT ( Adherence Support Coalition to End TB) helps patients successfully complete their course of treatment through the use of digital adherence technologies and data-driven support interventions, utilizing tools such as smart pill boxes and other innovations. These digital adherence technologies empower patients to take their daily medication at a time and place that suits them best. Additionally they provide real-time information to the TB doctor or nurse, helping to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for each individual patient and by enabling focused efforts on those patients that require extra support. At this moment, these technologies are only used on a small scale in the international fight against TB. The ASCENT project aims to make them accessible to all TB patients worldwide. The ASCENT project (July 2019 – Dec 2022) will build on existing evidence, innovations in adherence technology and growing global momentum to implement integrated digital adherence technology interventions in five key countries (Ethiopia, the Philippines, South Africa, Tanzania, and Ukraine) for all types of TB (DS-TB, DR-TB, LTBI). Comprised of four key outputs, the ASCENT project will operationalize a digital adherence technology intervention in diverse geographic, cultural, and infrastructural settings.

KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation is a Dutch NGO devoted to eliminating the single most important infectious disease killer, TB. Our team includes physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, data-specialists, trainers and advocates, with expertise in all aspects of TB care and prevention. KNCV was established in 1903 as the result of Dutch civil society engagement against the TB epidemic. We are proud of these roots. Today, more than 350 employees worldwide contribute to our mission to free the world of TB. KNCV aims for sustainable progress and thus always works through national governments, ensuring optimal collaboration with technical and private sector partners at global and country levels.

What we believe At KNCV, we find it unjust and indefensible that millions of people still die from a curable disease. TB not only causes immense suffering for patients and their families, it also has a profound negative impact on the economic potential of communities, regions and countries. We believe that the investment case for TB is very strong. We believe that we can END TB provided that we generate, apply and share evidence and work in true partnership with all public and private partners, including patients. We believe that our experience in low prevalence countries, including diagnosis and treatment of latent TB infection, is relevant to End TB in high burden countries.

What we do KNCV combines evidence generation, technical assistance, policy development and advocacy under one roof. We offer highly specialized technical assistance at the country level with an emphasis on the adoption, evaluation and scale-up of new tools and strategies. As such, we contribute to local and global policy guidance while ensuring that country realities are taken into account. Our KNCV package includes important determinants of success in TB care and prevention such as health financing, stigma reduction, human resource management and digital solutions.
