About the Position
CIVIC is seeking highly qualified applicants for the Research consultant position in Somalia. The consultant will support CIVIC’s “Contributing to Peaceful and Safe Societies” project. The goal of this project is to strengthen policy and programming on protection of civilians so that civilians experience a significant reduction in conflict-related harm. The primary role of the consultant will be to conduct semi-structured interviews to inform a research study on the differential role and experiences of women and men who engage in community-based protection activities in Somalia. The consultant is expected to support CIVIC’s work for a period of approximately 18-20 days, which will include training, preparation, data collection, data transcription, data translation, and data validation.

Travel: To Beledweyne and Baidoa, Somalia
Reports to: CIVIC East Africa Researcher and Senior Research Advisor

Key Functions
· Translate interview guides and interview consent script from English into Somali for interviews
· Conduct 2-4 focus group discussions with civilians in one to two locations
· Conduct semi-structured interviews with 30-35 civilians and civil society leaders split between Beledweyne and Baidoa.
· Record and transcribe interviews
· Translate interview transcripts into English
· Facilitate validation of the data through workshops organized by CIVIC with community members
Experience/Qualifications
· 3-5 years of relevant work experience desired;
· Bachelor of arts degree desired but not required;
· Knowledge, experience, and understanding of humanitarian protection issues and gender considerations in armed conflict;
· Fluency in English and Somali;
· Experience translating materials between English and Somali languages and interpreting between English and Somali languages;Demonstrated experience conducting interview-based data, ideally on sensitive topics.
· Computer literacy, including use of internet and word processing .
· Ability and willingness to travel within Somalia. · Demonstrated work experience in Somalia;
