Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) is an international Italian NGO established in 1965. Since then COOPI has been undertaking activities to help and empower the poor and needy in different countries. COOPI Ethiopia started its operation in 1995 and its activities include water resources development, Food Security, Human and Veterinary Health, Education, Agriculture, Hygiene and Sanitation Promotion & Awareness and Capacity Building.

COOPI based on the grant secured from Italian Embassy is currently implementing a 18-months project titled Integrated project for improving access to basic services and enhancing environmental resources at Wonchi – AID 10981. The project aims to improve the living conditions of Haro-Wenchi population through the strengthening of basic services (water and sanitation) and the sustainable valorisation of natural resources through improved Responsible Eco-Tourism Services.

To this extent, COOPI is currently looking to hire Saving and credit Expert, to contribute for achieving the project overall objective.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the saving and credit expert will be responsible for:

  • Assessing the social, human, and institutional factors of sustainability of WETA SCAs;
  • Developing formats for monitoring and evaluation of WETA SCAs at social, human, and institutional levels;
  • Identifying the entities which are more appropriate for WETA SCAs sustainability;
  • Providing advice on undertaking training programs for WETA SCAs beneficiaries;
  • Ensuring of integration of gender issues in planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation activities in the cooperatives and WETA productive groups;
  • Assisting in monitoring of SCAs;
  • Advising the project management in social, economic and institutional issues;
  • Daily follow up the sociological, economic and institutional activities of WETA;
  • Involvement in project planning process.
  • Write monthly report  according to COOPI standard form
  • Undertake the necessary SCA and cooperatives surveys and compile technical reports  and deliver to the PM on every 20th of the month;
  • Participate on meetings with the communities, cooperatives, SCA, productive groups and WETA when needed in any case without power decision;
  • Prepare detailed physical and financial quarter plan following the format given by the PM and submit to the PM
  • Organize and implement activities according to the work order assigned;
  • Assist the project in undertaking assessments on food security, socio-economic, needs, eco-tourism, WaSH and etc. in accordance with the necessities;
  • Assist in preparation of new projects ideas, assessments, etc.
  • Facilitate the project SCA, cooperative development, value chain and community development sectors onsite along with facilitation of training, community meeting, activity implementation and progress follow up in accordance to COOPI format
  • Support and facilitate the coops, productive groups, SCA, WETA on financial management, cooperative principles and laws governing Coops and marketing strategies in the intended project
  • Facilitate meeting with communities and primary cooperatives when needed and agreed with the, PM and in any case without power decision
  • Support on improving the quality of outputs of the coops, SCA, WETA and productive groups on how to use the provided essential material, human and financial resources required for the intended activity
  • Assist coops on how to mainstream gender and bring women in to the decision making power of the coops/union (managerial committee) and coop/SCA members
  • Assist and follow up the management of each productive groups, SCA members, WETA closely with coop committees, kebele administrations and government offices (CPO)
  • Other duties related to the position and given by the PM.
  • Daily site supervision of the sector’s activities in accordance to COOPI format ;

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:

  • Msc/BSc degree in Business Administration, Management and or Social Science with specialization in Saving and Credit related activities

Work Experience:

  • At least 3 years experience in carrying out in Saving and Credit activities and strong knowledge of cross-cutting issues in the Eco-Tourism sector (including Gender, Environment, Vulnerable Groups);
  • Proven experience of capacity building and facilitation of multi-stakeholder processes;
  • Capacity and experience in community mobilization, sensitization activities, in collaboration with district officers and extension staff.

Skills:

  • Strong skills in technical knowledge;
  • Ability to work well within a team and take responsibility to deliver results;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, Afan Oromo and Amharic
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and difficult physical conditions in an area of potential insecurity;
  • Knowledge of working area and local language is an advantage;
  • Respect culture, believe of diverse ethnic communities;
  • Analytical skills needs, gaps and opportunities in relation to the integration of gender issues in planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation activities in the cooperatives and WETA productive groups  activities of this project;
  • Computer literacy, with good command of standard office software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Strong commitment to follow the rules and procedures of the organization;

Duration of the contract:

  • 4 months with possibility of extension

Since 2006 it has also been involved in the Child Sponsorship Programme in 8 countries, providing food, education, health and protection to 2,712 children. COOPI employs 125 expatriates and 3,800 local operators. In Italy it employs 50 employees, 15 co-workers and 653 volunteers. From 1965 to 2015, COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale has helped 100 million people in 63 Countries, by employing 55,000 local workers in 1,600 projects.
