Job Title: Social Behavior Change Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern

Location: Monrovia

Reports to: RMEL Specialist

Breakthrough ACTION Liberia is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to lead social and behavior change (SBC) programming in 12 counties. Led by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP), Breakthrough ACTION Liberia partners include Viamo and ideas42. The vision of the Breakthrough ACTION Liberia project is to deliver effective, high-quality social and behavior change (SBC) activities in Liberia that will result in improved demand and use of health services for malaria; maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH); nutrition; family planning/ reproductive health (FP/RH); adolescent health; and water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and engage communities in behaviors to prevent zoonotic and non-zoonotic infections in line with the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA).

Summary: Supporting monitoring and evaluation efforts will be a key responsibility of the Social Behavior Change Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern. The intern will work directly with the program team, which consists of Field Managers, Team leads, and Activity leads, to complete M&E and program-related duties. These responsibilities, which are all centered on the organization’s efforts to promote positive social behavior change, include data collecting, analysis, presentation development, meeting minutes documenting, and reporting. The intern will also submit updates every two weeks regarding scheduled activities carried out over the course of the weeks. Through effective coordination and collaboration activities, the role entails encouraging collaboration among Field Managers, Team Leads, Activity Leads, government partners, and other non-governmental stakeholders at both national and sub-national levels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The M&E intern’s specific duties will include:

  • Collaborate with all FMs, TLs, and ALs at national and sub-national levels to support M&E and program-related activities.
  • Support the MEL Advisor/Specialist in updating the MIS system for the project
  • Assist in the development and implementation of monitoring and evaluation plans for social behavior change activities across the 12 supported counties.
  • Conduct data analysis using Excel or other tools like odk, ona, and DHIS2 to generate insights and recommendations.
  • Assist in the preparation of monitoring and evaluation, quarterly and monthly reports including visualizations of data from the field.
  • Participate in meetings with project teams to provide updates on M&E activities and findings.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of M&E processes and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the organization to integrate M&E findings into program planning and decision-making.
  • Ensure that project data are entered into the database and updated on a timely basis.
  • Prepare regular progress reports on activities undertaken, results achieved against targets, and plan for follow-up actions.
  • Participate in program meetings, make presentations on program and M&E-related activities, and ensure that lessons learned are fed back into project implementation.
  • Perform job duties/responsibilities in support of CCP’s mission and values, as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the MEL Specialist

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities at this time.

Education and/or Experience: Not more than 2 years post-bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Public Health, Social Science, Humanities, project management, M&E).

Required experience will include:

  • Strong interest in monitoring and evaluation and willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis techniques and good presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills in computer (micro-soft suit).
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently when needed.
  • Strong experience working with community channels or structures.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and demonstrable ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop collaborative relationships and networks between government, nongovernment organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, make independent decisions to consistently demonstrate sound ethics, and act with integrity.

Preferred experience

  • Experience developing, designing, M&E presentations for meetings or workshops.
  • Experience with monitoring field activities, data capture, and timely project reporting.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to use technology to connect, share, exchange, update team members, and develop project documents.
  • Experience with data collection and management platforms, such as odk, DHIS2, ona etc.
