ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Overall purpose of the role:
The School Counsellor will be based in the primary, JS schools and EARC centers in Dadaab, and will be in charge of providing psychosocial support and counselling to learners with needs. The role holders will take the lead in ensuring efficient and effective systems are in place to support children’s social and emotional needs and development with the aim to foster resilience and school retention. The School Counsellor will promote children’s psycho social wellbeing, provide preventive services, and respond to identified children’s needs by coordinating a comprehensive psycho social support program that addresses personal and social development needs for children. The Counselor works in coordination with all members of the school community to establish and strengthen positive working relationships in the best interests of children and provides support and guidance for parents/ caregivers and school staff when necessary.
Key responsibilities;
- Provide psychosocial support for children in schools
- Conduct an assessment of the needs of children/learners and develop an appropriate strategy/ case plan for addressing their needs.
- Coordinate small group and individual counselling sessions with children with identified needs
- Liaise with the teaching staff concerning children with learning support needs that could affect the child’s academic performance and/or behavior;
- Take an active role in behavioral management and care for children
- Support and guide teachers in helping children in their personal and social development and in the early identification of children with problems
- Collaborate with stakeholders (both inside and outside school) to develop and implement a responsive psycho social support program that support the achievement of children’s psycho social well being
- Consult with and implement trainings and workshops for teachers, parents and staff regarding children’s psycho social and emotional needs.
- Provide up‐to‐date, accurate records as relates to the children’s psycho social wellbeing improvement
- Organize and lead psycho social activities in schools including play therapy sessions, and other activities in schools to promote participation of all children and improve children’s psycho social well being
- Carry out additional activities, as requested, in line with the general expectations of this position within school and job description.
Project Planning, Design and implementation
- Ensure timely implementation of project activities; target outputs and outcomes being achieved.
- Support in developing detailed implementation plans including procurement plans, work plans and distribution schedules of program inputs. eaAKgIo BVUcJh
- Prepare timely and high quality programme and donor reports on safeguarding project activities (Weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual) in compliance with internal LWF requirements and any relevant external donor requirements.
- Provide operational supervision to incentive staff in the implementation of project activities by leading in monthly planning with staff and ensuring resources are appropriately utilized.
- Perform other tasks that may be assigned by the immediate Supervisor.
Multi agency working
- Represent the school at mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) working group meetings and other initiatives focused on supporting the needs of children and their families.
- Ensure that the outcomes of these meetings are appropriately communicated; actions are carried out within deadlines and are effectively monitored.
- Co-ordinate with partner agencies, working in schools to provide effective support
Qualifications and
Education Requirements
Key technical skills and knowledge:
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Counselling, Psychology or a higher diploma in counselling with a minimum of 3 years related work experience respectively.
- Well versed in Psycho educational interventions
- Experience in the provision of psychosocial services to refugees’ /asylum seekers
- Good report writing and communication skills
- Registered Member of KCPA or any other relevant professional membership.
- A team player with ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to use a wide range of child counseling methodologies
- Ability to maintain professionalism in services delivery and ethics
- Experience in case management including management of case conferences
