ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Job holders report to the Senior Administration Associate and the Heaod of Field Office or the designate. Job holders are assigned to provide transport services to senior WFP staff, high ranking officials and visitors; and/or support coordination of transport-related services by planning and assigning the routes and schedules for other drivers, and planning the overall vehicle maintenance.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide efficient and safe transportation to WFP staff and/or provide support in coordinating transport-related services.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  • Delivery and collection of various items following authorized routing and UN safety and security rules and regulations to ensure safe and efficient services.
  • Plan and assign routes and schedules for other Drivers
  • Accurate maintenance of vehicle log books
  • Daily reporting to the supervisor on mechanical status of the vehicle to ensure efficient vehicle use and fuel consumption supporting accurate accounting and cost efficiency
  • Coordinate vehicle maintenance ensuring vehicles are fully equipped with required travel authorisations and supplies, assigned equipment on board is in good condition.
  • Follow established rules and regulations for field deliveries.
  • Report an accident immediately to the supervisor and seek for instructions and facilitate informative decisions on the way forward.
  • Check on cleanliness of vehicles allocated to the drivers by carrying out regular vehicle inspections
  • Check fleet equipment and damages to the vehicle on weekly basis
  • Maintaining spare parts inventory
  • Compiling monthly fuel reports, Sign fuel requests forms, CTOs and Log books after checking them
  • Prepare vehicle entrance log sheets
  • Driver appraisals, induction, coaching and motivation

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of secondary school education. Formal drivers training with a valid driver’s license/certification to operate assigned vehicle following local rules and regulations.

Experience: Three or more years of work experience as a Driver preferably in an international organization, embassy or UN system with a demonstrated safe driving record. Experience in driving a variety of makes and models of vehicles, including vans, trucks and other kinds of motorized vehicles. Experience in defensive driving is desirable. A valid defensive driver’s licence is a must.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies, local roads/waterways and conditions, and security issues.
  • Good understanding of transport services and ability to coordinate routes and schedules for other Drivers.
  • Knowledge of driving/boat operating rules and regulations whichever applicable.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and safety equipment (e.g. fire extinguishers, buoyant wearable safety devices, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to assess vehicles for mechanical fitness and skills in minor vehicle repairs.
  • Knowledge of the vehicle loading capacity and other parameters.
  • Knowledge and ability to use radio, email, telephone and other applications.
  • Basic skills to assist in case of emergency, knowledge of first aid basic methods.
  • Ability to demonstrate a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy and tact.

Language: Fluency in English language and Shona/Ndebele is mandatory.

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide.

WFP was first established in 1961[4] after the 1960 Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Conference, when George McGovern, director of the US Food for Peace Programmes, proposed establishing a multilateral food aid programme. The WFP was formally established in 1963 by the FAO and the United Nations General Assembly on a three-year experimental basis. In 1965, the programme was extended to a continuing basis.

Organization

The WFP is governed by an Executive Board which consists of representatives from 36 member states. Ertharin Cousin is the current Executive Director, appointed jointly by the UN Secretary General and the Director-General of the FAO for a five-year term. She heads the Secretariat of the WFP. The European Union is a permanent observer in the WFP and, as a major donor, participates in the work of its Executive Board.

Its vision is a "world in which every man, woman and child has access at all times to the food needed for an active and healthy life."

The WFP has a staff of about 11,500 people, the majority of whom work in remote areas.

Goals and strategies

United Nations C-130 Hercules transports deliver food to the Rumbak region of Sudan.

The WFP unloads humanitarian aid at the Freeport of Monrovia during Joint Task Force Liberia.

The WFP strives to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, with the ultimate goal in mind of eliminating the need for food aid itself.
