1. Background and rationale

Effective communication is a fundamental right and a cornerstone for inclusion, accessibility and equity for Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals. The Sign Language Interpreter/Tactile Interpreter will play a crucial role in facilitating communication amongst the CBM Country team and ensuring that the end users fully participate in various activities within and outside the country team. To meet this need, the service of a qualified Sign Language Interpreter is required.

2. Objectives

To provide professional sign language interpretation services that support effective communication and inclusivity for the Disability Inclusion Advisor and any other Deaf person in CBM Global Country Team.

3. Scope

The scope of the Sign Language Interpretation:

  • Providing real-time interpretation from spoken language to sign language and vice versa during meetings, workshops, or conferences.
  • Ensuring accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation that aligns with the communication preferences of the Disability Inclusion Advisor
  • Facilitating clear and seamless communication between Disability Inclusion Advisor and hearing teammates and other people.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in handling all information shared during the engagement
  • Collaborating with country teammates, event organizers to ensure effective interpretation logistics, including seating arrangements, visibility, and technical requirements are in place.

4. Deliverables

The deliverables for the consultancy including;

  • Bring ethical and professional conduct during services as spelt-out in the do-no-harm principles and adhering to CBM Global safeguarding policies.
  • Ensuring Deaf participatory and inclusive methods are well implemented.
  • Demonstrate experience in the field and sharing of knowledge
  • Provide interpretation in sign language to the Deaf participants.

5.Time-frame and duration

The timeframe for this consultancy will cover weekly, day-day activities including travels for a duration of one year.

6. Place/ location of service delivered

The consultancy engagement will take place at CBM Global Nigeria Country Office and other external engagement as required by the Disability Inclusion Advisor

7. Required Expert Profile

The key requirements of the consultancy include:

  • Good communication skills in both sign language and speaking.
  • Fluency in Nigerian Sign Language and the spoken language (s) of the event.
  • Have strong background and knowledge of pre-lingual Deaf and disability inclusivivity
  • Strong, confident in command of both oral and sign language
  • Prove experience in interpreting in/for Deaf persons and other persons with disabilities
  • Have effective human connections and code of ethics in professionalism including quick thinking and observational skills.
  • Analytical skills proven through similar consultancy experiences.

8. Conflict Resolution

The Consultant shall comply with all applicable CBM Global policies, procedures, and guidelines as they relate to the execution of this contract, including those on safeguarding, disability inclusion, and ethical conduct;

  • In the event of any dispute arising between the Consultant and the Disability Inclusion Advisor, both Parties shall make every reasonable effort to resolve the matter amicably through good-faith negotiations.
  • Where the dispute cannot be resolved at this level, either Party may formally notify the issue in writing to the appropriate Management head for further review and resolution.
  • All dispute resolution processes shall be conducted in a respectful, inclusive, and non-discriminatory manner, ensuring accessibility for all parties involved

9. Contract Termination

This contract may be terminated in the event that either the Consultant or the other party breaches any of the terms and conditions outlined in the agreement. Kindly refer to the signed contract for full details.

10. Payment Schedule

The consultant will be paid an agreed monthly fee upon satisfactory completion of the services.

Withholding tax at the prevailing rate applies.

Payment terms and conditions will be outlined in the contract.
