Lawyers against Abuse (LvA) is an NGO based in Diepsloot, an informal settlement in the northern part of Johannesburg.  We provide direct legal and psychosocial services to victims of gender-based violence (GBV), including sexual violence, domestic violence, and child abuse.  LvA works closely with local state actors, including police officers, prosecutors, clerks, magistrates, and government health officials. LvA also facilitates awareness-raising initiatives such as school and community workshops.

LvA seeks to appoint a Social Auxiliary Worker to be based in Diepsloot, Johannesburg.

Employment Type: Contract position

Start Date: as soon as possible until March 2021, after which renewal is based on funding availability and performance.

Salary: Negotiable, based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intakes at LvA Diepsloot Centre
  • Assessment of psychosocial needs of GBV victims
  • Facilitate referrals and follow-ups on other services needed
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure quality and holistic service for GBV victims
  • Provide support and assistance to psychosocial team
  • Assist with psychoeducational workshops for caregivers and other family members of GBV victims
  • Outreach activities and community engagement
  • Conduct administrative tasks related to the programme
  • Write monthly reports and other documentation for the programme.

    Requirements:

  • Qualified Social Auxiliary Worker
  • Current registration with SACSSP
  • Minimum two years’ experience as a Social Auxiliary Worker
  • Knowledge of individual, group and community work
  • Experience working with GBV victims preferred and/or strong understanding of impact of GBV on individuals, families and communities
  • Experience working within a community-based setting preferred
  • Fluency in isiZulu, Sepedi and/or Tshivenda
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, both individually and in a team
  • Computer proficiency, especially with Microsoft Office suite
