Doctors without borders has been providing free medical services in South Africa since 1999 (Khayelitsha project). In 2015, MSF opened an ambitious project in Rustenburg, North West Province focusing on services related to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).

CONTEXT
Doctors without borders has initiated a project focussing on medical and psychological care for victims of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) in close collaboration with Department of Health and other organisations and stakeholders. The objective of the project is:

  • Survivors of sexual and domestic violence in the platinum belt of Bojanala district access quality medical care, psychosocial support and are referred to appropriate social and legal services according to their needs and their wishes
  • Family Planning and Choice Termination Of Pregnancy services are provided to all women who request the service

The project is now looking for a Supervisor Medical Data Entry to take responsibility for the projects medical data collection, analysis and development.

MAIN PURPOSE

  • Supervise, organise and support the activity of Data Entry officers in MSF-supported Department of Health Community Health Care Clinics.
  • Ensure complete and accurate entry and management of all medical-psycho-social data into the Rustenburg project database(s).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Collection, management and quality assurance of project data  

  • Kgomotso Care Centers at DoH facilities and outreach sites
    • Ensure timely and up-to-date entry of data from the medical files, and DOH registers as applicable, to the project database(s).
      • Work closely with the medical and psycho-social teams to ensure medical record keeping is complete and accurate.  Refer back to the patient folders as required.
    • Perform regular data quality assurance checks as defined by SOP for data quality audit.
    • With support from the project medical referent, work closely with DOH staff and MSF medical managers, to ensure medical record keeping is complete and accurate.
    • Liaise with Department of Health (DoH) facility managers, data capturers, clerical staff, and other external stakeholders as needed to support and assist with the data collection processes in clinics.
    • Problem solve around issues of poor data quality and the opportunity for quality improvement, with regular feedback to DoH/MSF staff on monitoring and evaluation of activities.
  • Health promotion and CTOP data management
  • Other project data as required
  • Conduct monthly, quarterly data reporting
    • Provide monthly and ad-hoc statistics and data analysis to the Project Coordinator, Project Medical referent and Mission Epidemiologist for review and discussion with medical team.
    • Coordinate quarterly and annual reporting with the Project management team.
    • Assist the PMR in drafting the quarterly stakeholder report for DOH.
    • Provide essential data summary monthly.
  • Others:
    • Provide technical support in terms of data management and analysis to the medical team and supervisors in project sites and give response to their training needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:   

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific or numerate discipline (e.g., statistics, biostatistics).
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with data/databases, including experience in data management, data cleaning, reporting and training data staff.
  • Previous training and experience using databases and data management and analyses software such as MS Excel, MS Access, Stata, RedCap.
  • Solid computer literacy: excellent in MS Word and MS Power Point.
  • Fluent in English.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Master’s level training in demography, epidemiology and/or public health.
  • Previous experience working in the area of sexual and gender-based violence.
  • Previous experience with mobile-health
  • Knowledge of the Bojanala district.

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Proactive individual who can take initiative and work independently.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team.
  • Good organizational skills including administrative and time management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work in a variety of environments, including clinic-based registries.
  • Problem solving approach

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
