We are looking for a Technical Lead – Gender who will operate from our office in Nairobi, Kenya, and will contribute to the development of VVOB’s Gender initiative in the Regional Facility for Teachers in Africa (RFTA), providing technical advice in close consultation with partners in different parts of Africa, starting in Kenya, Ghana and South Africa.

Responsibilities of the Technical Lead

As technical lead of VVOB’s Gender initiative in the Regional Facility for Teachers in Africa (RFTA) you contribute to the ambition and values of VVOB by being the key person on Gender and gender responsive pedagogy in the regional Gender hub, by providing technical and strategic advice and guidance on this domain both within VVOB and outside.

Reporting to the Regional Programmes Manager based in Kenya, you lead the technical team within the regional programmes, and you work closely together with the entire regional team, Global Strategic Education Advisors and the country teams.

You will:

  • You provide organisational leadership (on-the-job mentoring, coaching, capacity development, change management) for your direct reports (Regional Strategic Education Advisors) and you foster good relationships with and between partners and teams, supporting a positive organisational culture.
  • You design and develop relevant and scalable gender responsive pedagogy projects in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You provide both short- and long-term strategic advice, information, and guidance to VVOB and VVOB’s partners on gender and gender responsive pedagogies, in line with policy trends, new developments and the latest research and thinking in education and international development.
  • You take up a variety of roles in capacity development as well as in knowledge exchange, learning and development processes; according to the needs, particular situations, and phases of the programme.
  • For the implementation of our regional project(s) and activities, you contribute to securing cooperations and support from VVOB’s partners and maintaining a strong network with them. You promote VVOB as a reliable partner and you represent our organisation towards external stakeholders.
  • You support the Regional Strategic Education Advisor Advocacy and Communication on developing content for communication (e.g., website, video, social media…) and contribute to the dissemination of findings and results (e.g., international conferences, seminars, workshops, and other events) on scaling gender responsive initiatives.
  • You support the Regional Strategic Education Advisor Scaling in guiding country teams and partners in assessing the scalability of gender responsive initiatives and developing effective scaling strategies that take into account the specific needs and contexts of the initiatives.

Your expertise and experience

  • Master’s degree in education, human sciences, or related field or equivalent experience
  • Experience managing in leading multicultural and effective teams.
  • In depth understanding of the national education system and education sector; especially in regard to gender equity and gender responsive pedagogy.
  • Experience with scaling teacher professional development initiatives.
  • Experience in organizational and institutional capacity development.
  • Experience with international development cooperation and with managing projects and programs of different donors.
  • Fluent in English, knowledge of French or Portuguese is an advantage.
  • Have the right to work in Kenya
  • Location: Nairobi, Kenya (KEMI/Parklands)
