Position Title: Translation Intern (Re-advertisement)

Position grade: Non-Remunerated but monthly subsistence allowance will be paid to

cover transportation and living expenses

Duty Station: Remote support

Appointment Type: Internship, six months with possibility of extension

Established in 1951, International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and nongovernmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

The Internship Programme targets young, talented students and graduates willing to gain practical experience in a field relevant to the Organization through their involvement in daily working activities in migration-related areas, support/administrative functions and/or different thematic areas.

Context:

IOM Regional Office in Pretoria support country missions, working on complex emergencies, providing humanitarian relief, policy and human capacity development and building capacities member states on migration management. With generous financial support from bilateral and multilateral donors, and in close coordination and partnership with relevant Government counterparts on regional consultative processes (RCPs) on migration, interregional forums on migration and global processes on migration in close collaboration with the UN entities and civil society, to safeguard the rights of vulnerable populations including migrants; operating through its Regional Office in Pretoria and 15 country offices in the Southern Africa region.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Regional Policy and Liaison Officer (RPLO) in close coordination with the Regional Media & Communication Officer and relevant Regional Thematic Specialists (RTSs), the incumbent will provide day to day translation support to the Regional Office and Country offices with high quality, accurate and timely translation of documents from English to French.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Translate all documents for Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa (MiDSA), Migration Dialogue for the Indian Ocean Commission (MiDIOC) and Global Compact for Migration (GCM) Africa continental Review
  2. Support all translation of documents to be delivered to the member states and Regional Economic Communities – RECs (Official letters etc.)
  3. Translate the Southern Africa migration report related documents (Concept notes, ToR for all the process
  4. Support in translation of regional office visibility materials and communication materials (IOM @ 70 etc.)
  5. Support in translation documents for regional workshop and training that involve member states
  6. Update the online regional media library by liaising with Communication Focal Points in Country Offices
  7. Assist in reviewing and compiling online media articles mentioning IOM
  8. Perform such other duties as may be assigned

Required qualifications and Experience

Education

· Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in French or Portuguese or related field of discipline from an accredited university

Experience

· At least one year of experience in professional translation

· In-depth knowledge of translation for governments documents

· Ability to work independently and effectively within tight deadlines

· Experience designing capacity building events and facilitating training sessions for a variety of audiences

Languages

Fluency in English & French is required for this position. Knowledge of Portuguese or other UN Official Languages is advantageous.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

· have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities,

· are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies,

· are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor,

· are enrolled in the final academic year of a first University Degree programme,

· are enrolled in a graduate school programme (second University Degree or equivalent, or higher);

· have graduated with a University Degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
