Title: Human Resources Intern

Location: Kigutu, Burundi

Duration: 3 to 6 months (with possibility of extension)

Type: Unpaid Internship (Full-time)

Position Summary

The HR Intern will provide critical administrative and operational support to the Senior HR & Admin Manager. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional passionate about human resources, organizational development, and social impact. The intern will gain exposure to core HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

HR Administration Support (40%)

  • Assist in maintaining accurate personnel files and documentation
  • Support the preparation and filing of HR records and contracts
  • Help schedule meetings, interviews, and training sessions

Recruitment & Onboarding (20%)

  • Post job advertisements and screen applications
  • Coordinate candidate interviews and logistics
  • Assist with onboarding materials and staff orientation

Performance & Development (15%)

  • Support the tracking of probation and evaluation periods
  • Assist with scheduling and documentation of performance reviews
  • Help maintain the training and development calendar

Compliance & Safeguarding (10%)

  • Ensure HR documents align with Burundian labor law and VHW policies
  • Promote safeguarding and confidentiality standards

Employee Engagement & Events (10%)

  • Assist with planning staff events, celebrations, and HR-led campaigns
  • Support communication of HR initiatives and updates

Other Duties (5%)

  • Participate in cross-functional projects as assigned
  • Provide backup support to administrative staff when needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or final year student) in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or related field
  • Previous internship or volunteer experience in HR or administration preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Discretion and ability to handle confidential information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English and French; Kirundi is an advantage
  • Commitment to the mission and values of VHW
