Under the direct supervision of the Urban Water Project Manager, the WatHab Engineer 1 plans, designs, and implements engineering projects within the scope of the ICRC’s water and habitat assistance objectives with supervision and coaching from his /her hierarchical superior. S/he monitors on-site works, carries out needs assessments and surveys, and plans new projects. S/he has a close working relationship with external stakeholders related to their projects. In his capacity as Urban Water Engineer, he will support the WatHab Department in the development and implementation of Urban WatHab projects in Maiduguri town.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Is the Urban Water Engineer for all urban water projects in Maiduguri town and supports the Urban Water Project Manager with the development and implementation of urban water projects for the Sub-delegation in Maiduguri.
  • Draws up documents (drawings, bills of quantities, contracts, etc.) for engineering projects using approved formats; monitors project implementation for compliance with project documents, ICRC standards, and local building codes/standards, ensuring corrective action is taken where necessary.
  • In coordination with the Urban- Water Project Manager as well as concerned authorities:
    • Carries out field trip to operational areas.
    • Assesses WatHab-related needs, including multidisciplinary assessments.
    • Designs project proposals (incl. rationale, physical drawings- and process design, cost estimation, logistic needs, tentative planning).
    • Prepares tender and contract documents for approved projects.
    • Ensures the implementation of agreed works.
  • Supervises small numbers of contractors working on project sites and conducts quality control of infrastructure installed by the ICRC. Ensure proper and close supervision, and monitoring of the implementation of WatHab projects, under the guidance of the WatHab Urban Delegate.
  • Provide training, support, and monitoring of partners (i.e. National Society Staff, technical departments of local authorities, contractors) as required.
  • Coordinates with Logistic on all matters related to procurement, particularly approve project procurement requests, participate to bids evaluation, and contract awarding.
  • Provides input to operational reports (assessments, Quarterly reports).
  • Provides constant communication of program status, issues, or concerns with the WatHab Urban delegate.
  • Maintains and develops a network of various interlocutors of interest for WatHab and Operations in his/her AoR (e.g: Community leaders, contractors, NRCS, NGOs and other relevant actors).
  • Contribute to emergency assistance support during crisis (rapid deployment, needs assessments, quick response)

Education and Experience Required

  • University degree in Water Supply Engineering; Civil and Water Resources Engineering and/or Environmental Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in water supply engineering, with a focus in water supply system planning and design, water treatment process design and optimization, pipeline and distribution system design, water storage and pumping station design.
  • Very good working knowledge of AutoCAD, EPANET and other water modelling programs/software.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Good command (Spoken and Written) of English.
  • Applicants should have a Nigerian nationality.

Desired Profile and Skills

  • Strong understanding of water supply engineering principles, including hydraulics, and water treatment processes.
  • Proficiency in design software (e.g., CAD, GIS, water modelling programs)
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams.
