MSc & PhD Scholarships at University of the Witwatersrand/University of Warwick/University of Amsterdam, 2019/2020


The Department of Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand is looking to award one Masters and two PhD fellowships to junior researchers to carry out ethnographic research on the circulation, regulation and consumption of pharmaceuticals in South Africa, Tanzania,and India.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The project seeks junior researchers who have a keen interest in questions of medical anthropology and/ or pharmaceutical anthropology and/or questions of formal and informal regulation of markets, health and commodities and/or India Ocean studies.
  • Previous qualitative/ethnographic research experience is highly desirable. One of the projects will be placed in Tanzania. Therefore, language proficiency in Swahili or the willingness to learn it are essential, as well as the willingness to spend extensive research and study time both in South Africa and in Tanzania.

Value of Award: MA and PhD candidates will be officially based at the University of the Witwatersrand but will get the opportunity to spend some study time at the University of Amsterdam or the University of Warwick. The project offers the possibility for the research to be part of and regularly discuss their work with a wider research team which stretches across Southern Africa, India and Europe.

Duration of Programme: The MA fellowship is for one year. The PhD fellowships are for four years. They are endowed with a monthly stipend and research budget.
