Biodiversity Preservation Center, Nigeria

Biodiversity Preservation Center (BPC), a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO), was established in 1996 and incorporated under the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria (CAC) since 2003, has been collaborating with identified communities and programs to stem the ugly trend of forest loss and encourage restoration. Selected communities that still have undestroyed natural forests have been identified and a number of targeted programs put in place with the aim of creating opportunities for the people to fully understand and appreciate the problems resulting from the habitat destruction. On the other hand, the people are empowered to participate in biodiversity preservation and at the same time given the right orientation on how to sustainably utilize NTFPs for their livelihood and economic needs.

BPC operates another charity-NGO, namely: COMMUNITY RURAL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME (CREP). The two Organizations work hand in hand. While BPC focuses on biodiversity aspects CREP’s empowerment activities are targeted at the affected rural communities to help cushion the effect of perceived income losses that go along with conservation initiatives. CREP was established essentially to empower rural communities located in areas of rich biodiversity so as to enlist their support in conservation efforts. This arrangement has gone down quite well with the communities as they are made to see the benefits directly.

BPC in its efforts to foster in-situ conservation in NIgeria have worked with multi-lateral agencies and governments to identify selected communities that still have remnant natural forests and endemic wildlife by anchoring targeted programs towards creating opportunities for the communities to fully understand and appreciate the benfits of biodiversity conservation and how it fosters sustainable development.
