The Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI), was founded in 1994 and is a non-profit independent research institute based in Cape Town, South Africa. EPRI is committed to pro-poor, equitable and inclusive economic growth and social protection for vulnerable people as a developmental response to poverty. EPRI is involved in Research, Capacity Building and Policy Advisory work.

Our mission

Our mission is that through research,  capacity-building work and technical assistance to country-led policy formation, we endeavor to build South-South cooperation and develop local knowledge. We are committed to building and sharing an evidence base on social protection that is drawn from economic analysis and global lessons of experience.

Our work

To achieve these goals, EPRI:

  • Works closely with development partners and multilateral organisations on social protection policy research, particularly with research and policy-oriented institutions in Africa.
  • Works with governments on social protection projects in over a dozen developing countries across Africa and Asia, including South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda, Kenya, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand.
  • Organises and hosts study tours for policymakers and other government officials, and has recently led visits to South Africa for delegations from Nigeria,  Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and Mozambique.
  • Offers social protection capacity building courses, including a two-week course on Designing and Implementing Social Transfer Programmes  that has drawn over 450 participants to date from governments, donor organisations and civil society.
  • Presents regularly at international, regional and national conferences on social protection, including events organised by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), UNICEF, the World Bank and the Ford Foundation.
  • Published the policy guide Designing and Implementing Social Transfers, which has been distributed to over 3,500 social protection practitioners around the world.

EPRI is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) registered under Section 21 of the Companies Act.
