Sarah Fox Children's Convalescent Hospital is a 60- bed intermediate- care facility in Silvertown, Athlone. The hospital opened in 1964 and has been providing much needed medical care to children from all over the Cape Metropole since. The hospital team consists of 24- hour nursing staff, professional nurses, medical officers, a full- time social worker, a part- time occupational therapist, 'nursery' school teacher, aromatherapist, music therapists, administrative & cleaning, and last but definitely not least volunteers & donors.The hospital has 3 wards: Ed Doman ward (babies), Isobel Robertson ward (toddlers/ older children) and the newly opened Palliative Care Unit (PCU). The PCU provides much needed care to children who have life- limiting conditions, or those who need respite care/ symptom control.Some of the diagnosis which are commonly managed at SFH include: malnutrtion, tuberculosis, retroviral disease, cerebral palsy, sequel of various syndromes, as well as burn injuries.The mission of SFH is ‘to provide expert nursing and medical care, in a homely and loving environment, for infants and children recovering from acute medical and surgical conditions who are, for social or medical reasons, unable to return to their own homes. The hospital also provides temporary care and education for infants and children who need tender loving care in a place of safety for social reasons’ (SFH, Mission Statement).
