The South African Education and Environment Project-USA (SAEP (USA)) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1994 to conduct educational and charitable activities in Southern Africa in general, and South Africa in particular. It was originally named the Southern Africa Environmental Project, but later changed its name to South African Education and Environment Project-USA to reflect concentration of its efforts in South Africa and a shift in mission primarily to educational rather than environmental activities.
For many years, SAEP (USA) operated in South Africa, but after it had registered a sister non-profit educational organization, the South African Education and Environment Project — referred to below as SAEP (SA) — it ceased direct operations in South Africa and since 2010 has only raised funds for SAEP (SA), which reports back to it on how the funds were used.
SAEP (SA) provides academic, life skills, and psycho-social support programs for children, youth and education providers in the some of the poorest and most under-resourced black townships of South Africa, primarily but not exclusively in and around Cape Town.
SAEP (USA) is a completely separate legal entity that shares SAEP (SA)’s educational goals. Contributions to SAEP (USA) are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
