In a country where over 40% of water pumps are broken, our Malawian water team work closely with the villagers themselves to build water pumps using local resources that are readily available, affordable and sustainable.Increased access to safe drinking water will only improve the health of the community if combined with improved sanitation facilities and hygiene behaviour. Therefore, Water Works also supports vulnerable households to construct latrines and hand-washing systems and runs a hygiene education programme to ensure that the villages gain the most from their improved water and sanitation facilities.We are a small charity with very low running costs, so over 98% of our funds go directly to supporting projects. Between 2011 and 16, we have helped 73 villages to construct water pumps, providing safe drinking water for over 13,000 people; supported 2,700 families to build latrines and run hygiene awareness programmes for over 3,800 people. We believe our innovative technology, using locally sourced materials and our close partnership with the village communities is the key to our success.
