The Opportunity

Living Goods has developed and proven a cost effective, high-impact community health care model using a business-minded focus on innovation, paired with critical public health delivery. To drive replication and scaling by partners, and to evolve the model to continue as a world-class health delivery initiative, we seek an innovative project manager to join our team as the Innovation Manager.  This new role will be based in Kampala and will project manage and coordinate with field teams on a range of innovations and experiments designed to drive improvement in health delivery, reductions in costs, or replicability by partners.

The Innovation Manager will work with outside partners to glean best practices, use this to inform project design, develop project plans and KPIs to test innovations, work with the field teams and across other departments (Finance, Procurement, Product) to implement effective pilots, monitor and supervise implementation, analyze and identify learnings, and inform overall operations on innovations that can be scaled.

The ideal candidate is a data-driven, detail-oriented individual with experience managing projects and timelines in a developing country.

Responsibilities:

  • Research best practices tied to innovations that will drive replication, scaling, or cost efficiencies through meeting with partners and scanning literature from other project implementers.
  • Design projects – work plans, budgets, KPIs – and that can drive replicability, efficiency or greater health impact.
  • Project manage key innovation experiments — including coordination with field teams, partners, and other Departments — to ensure effective implementation.
  • Provide ongoing support during implementation, with keen attention to insights gained, challenges and rapid adjustments needed to ensure success.
  • Review of analytics on an ongoing basis, assessments and recommendations for ongoing improvement and/or roll out.
  • Develop insights and case studies on innovations to provide lessons learned from initiatives, which will inform future operations activities for Living Goods and partners.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-4 years of project management experience in emerging markets, Africa preferred.
  • Strong analytics skills.
  • Strong communicator, able to work with multicultural teams.
  • Private sector experience in one of the following fields: consumer package goods, health delivery, pharmaceuticals, retail or direct selling/franchising, management consulting.
  • University degree required.  MBA preferred.
  • Ability and comfort to be in the field 50% of time.

Compensation

A competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience including health insurance and bonus opportunity.  The opportunity to be your best while making lives better for those in need.

What is Living Goods?

Living Goods supports networks of ‘Avon-like’ micro-entrepreneurs who go door-to-door teaching families how to improve their health and wealth while selling affordable, high-impact products like basic medicines, fortified foods, water filters, clean cook stoves, and solar lights. Living Goods seeks nothing less than a disruptive reinvention of distribution in emerging markets, through networks of franchised micro-entrepreneurs who leverage Living Goods’ brand, buying power and mobile marketing tools to deliver vital products at accessible prices to the people who need them most. By combining the best practices from the worlds of micro-enterprise, franchising and public health, Living Goods is creating a fully sustainable system to improve the health, and wealth, of underserved communities.

Living Goods is a non-profit organization operating in Uganda, Kenya, and Myanmar. Its goal is to build a sustainable distribution platform for products designed to fight poverty and disease in the developing world. Living Goods operates networks of independent entrepreneurs who make a living by selling medicines and products to poor people that can help improve their health, wealth, and productivity. Living Goods borrows from successful direct selling models like Avon Products, Amway and Tupperware. The project aims to be fully self-funded at scale.

Living Goods was founded by Chuck Slaughter in 2007

Living Goods focuses on three prevailing problems with health systems in the developing world: 1) the shortage of frontline health workers, 2) the inadequate distribution of basic health products in both the public and private sectors, and 3) the failure of innovations like clean cookstoves and solar lamps to reach scale. It is largely recognized that each of these problems increases in severity at the “last mile” where the need is greatest.

Using a double bottom line business approach, Living Goods aims to:

  • Reduce child mortality by at least 15%
  • Save poor families 20% on basic health products and daily necessities
  • Create incomes for thousands of entrepreneurs
  • Increase access to innovations
  • Scale impact via global replication of the Living Goods direct-selling model
