TEAM PURPOSE:
To provide leadership, coordinate and manage the development and delivery of advocacy, policy engagement and research for OZA’s South-South Cooperation Programme. OZA’s project on South-South Cooperation is part of a larger BRICSAMIT Global Leap Programme, which seeks to influence targeted governments from the BRICSAMIT region to adopt and implement pro-poor, pro-equity (including gender equality/women’s rights) and sustainable development policies and practices in global processes. These include: BRICS, G20 and South-South Cooperation (role of SA an emerging donor/partner). The project also entails influencing the development of new
Southern-led multi-lateral development banks such as the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB).
JOB PURPOSE
The role of the Project Officer is to assist in all areas related to the SSC project, which includes project design and implementation of advocacy, policy and research activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Advocacy/Policy Engagement
Coordinate advocacy and policy engagement activities within the SSC programme related to SA development cooperation; BRICS/NDB (New Development Bank); the G20; and other areas as required.
Research
Coordinate research with partners on SSC project, including design of a new research project on Women’s Economic Empowerment both at national level and with other BRICSAMIT participating countries.
Multi-stakeholder Relations
- Develop and build CSO partners and networks (national and global); think-tank/academic institutions; media; government officials; and, consultancies.
- Wide range of communication and representation both internally with country, regional and OI staff, in addition to outside parties including national and international media, public events and government officials.
Meeting/Event Coordination
Convene CSO partner meetings, multi-stakeholder meetings / dialogues; lobby meetings; and, other events as required.
Project Management
Project design and implementation, management of consultancies, partnership relations, meeting/events coordination; internal / donor reporting; and, other tasks.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Proven analytical and conceptual thinking, particularly in research and policy analysis.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of implementing advocacy programmes and initiatives
- Understanding and familiarity with policy processes, ideally derived from personal experience.
- Strong organisational and personal management skills with the ability to prioritise work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to constantly changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through.
- Excellent personal communication skills, in written and verbal English.
- Good knowledge of and experience with managing donor funded projects with experience in financial management, project budgeting, and budget monitoring.
- A high level of self-awareness, initiative, sound judgement, personal energy and flexibility.
- Ability and willingness to travel and to work extra hours as necessary
QUALIFICATIONS
- Academic qualifications: minimum undergraduate degree preferably in development studies, economics, business or human rights.
- Minimum 3-years work experience working in the NGO sector.
- Experience in human rights, gender studies and/or sustainable development an advantage.
