About MAG in Africa:
MAG supports the development of countries emerging from conflict by finding and destroying the explosive remnants of war, so that communities can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury. There are three predominate areas of focus in MAG’s programmes across West Africa, including Arms Management and Destruction (AMD) work, working with national defence and security authorities towards the safe storage management as well as destruction of weapons and munitions. In some programmes MAG also delivers risk education to ensure that local communities, refugees and displaced people in Mali keep themselves safe when exposed to the dangers of landmines and UXO. Alongside risk education MAG conducts non-technical survey, collecting information about the presence, type, distribution and surrounding environment of mines and UXO, to better define where the contamination is. This allows better prioritisation of clearance. These programmes include Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria and Mauritania.
About the role:
MAG is seeking a Regional Security Advisor (RSA) to support our programmes across our West Africa regional portfolio. This is a new position and the primary function of the RSA will be to provide advice to the Regional and Country Directors on all safety and security issues, as they relate to staff, assets and operations. The RSA will monitor and assess security conditions, and make recommendations to the Regional Director, Senior Managers in Country and MAG’s Global Security Advisor as appropriate. A solid understanding of NGO security management is a key requirement for the role, as is effective communication with key internal and external stakeholders. This is a great opportunity to use your extensive technical knowledge and experience in security management to support an organisation working hard to improve the lives of communities in challenging environments.
The RSA will report into the Regional Director for the West Africa portfolio. The base location will be Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso but with extensive travel throughout West Africa region.
About you:
The successful candidate will have considerable experience of security planning and implementation, preferably gained in the context of relief operations in highly insecure areas. The ability to analyse rapidly changing security environments, and react appropriately is also essential. Candidates should ideally also have experience of working in the West Africa region. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate excellent communication and liaison skills with an awareness of diplomacy and tact. Areas of operations are often remote with basic amenities, so applicants will need to be able to deal with living and working in challenging environments. Verbal and written English AND French language skills are essential for this role.
