The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) seeks to hire a Research Officer III – Healthy Diets who will strengthen the ability of the Center to provide evidence-based solutions for making vegetables more available, affordable, accessible and desirable in the low- and middle-income countries. The person will contribute to projects in Ethiopia, and elsewhere in the Southern and Eastern Africa Region, and will report functionally to the Scientist – Healthy Diets based in Arusha, Tanzania and administratively to the Liaison Officer – Ethiopia. This position will be based in the World Vegetable Center’s office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and undertaking of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies to characterize food environments and consumer behaviour, and understand their influence on access to and consumption of vegetables;
  • In liaison with supervisors and stakeholders, design, implement and evaluate evidence-based interventions targeting food environments and consumer behaviour to support greater access to and consumption of vegetables;
  • Share research findings through relevant formats, including presentations, reports, and communications with research participants;
  • Coordinate with research partners and other stakeholders in Ethiopia to ensure effectiveness, continuity and inclusiveness of research operations;
  • Contribute to project management and research fundraising efforts in Ethiopia and elsewhere in the Southern and Eastern Africa Region;
  • Provide guidance to colleagues and partners in Ethiopia on issues related to healthy diets, food environments and consumer behaviour;
  • Organize stakeholder meetings, attend meetings with partner institutions and communicate with stakeholders as a member of the World Vegetable Center;
  • Lead capacity development activities and supervise students or temporary employees on topics related to food systems, food environments and vegetable consumption, as agreed with the Scientist – Healthy Diets and Country Liaison Officer – Ethiopia; ea0Ugrh BVUcJh
  • Undertake other duties as required by and agreed with the World Vegetable Cente

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in food systems, Public Health Nutrition, Development Studies or a related discipline, with a strong focus on applied behavioral research with seven years of work experience.

Experience:

  • Seven years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in mixed methods research on food systems, in relation to food access and consumption, with relevant academic publications;

Skills:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with relevant methods, metrics and tools for food systems, food environment and dietary assessment;
  • Proficiency in quantitative data collection, analysis, and interpretation using statistical software (with a preference for STATA);
  • Proficiency in qualitative data collection, analysis and interpretation;
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English and Amharic, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse food systems stakeholders, multidisciplinary research collaborators, and research participants;
  • Willing to travel within Ethiopia and the Eastern and Southern African region.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Position level: HG 15

Minimum Base salary:

  • Birr 71,122 per month

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funds.
