About the Role

You will lead a diverse team of Human Centered Design (HCD) staff and user research teams to drive user-centric innovation and ensure that products, services, and experiences are aligned with the needs and behaviors of customers. You will manage the full lifecycle of research and design, from discovery to delivery, while supporting a team of specialists and researchers to deliver actionable insights that shape the strategy, design, and decision-making across Tupande. You will report to the Director of the Tupande Digital Team. You will be based in Kakamega.

Responsibilities

  • User research strategy & execution:
    • Design and implement comprehensive user research that aligns with Tupande’s product and service goals. Also, ensure research insights are translated into actionable recommendations and integrated into product design, service delivery, and strategic planning – Oversee the design and execution of qualitative and quantitative research projects, including user interviews, surveys, usability testing, field research, and ethnographic studies
  • Human-centered design leadership:
    • Lead the team in applying design thinking methodologies to address complex challenges, ensuring that user needs lead decision-making
    • Guide the brainstorming, prototyping, and iteration of design solutions, ensuring that they are tested and validated with users
    • Champion the importance of human-centered design as a strategic approach across all levels of the organization, ensuring it is embedded in Tupande’s culture.
    • Engage with leadership and cross-functional teams to promote a shared understanding of HCD principles, emphasizing the importance of creating impactful user-centered solutions across the entire organization.
  • Team leadership:
    • Lead, mentor, and support the user research and HCD team, fostering a collaborative work environment while fostering their professional growth
  • Collaboration:
    • Work with the global HCD lead to ensure the HCD strategy and processes are following best practice
    • Be an important liaison between the User Research & HCD team and other departments, ensuring agreement on project goals and timelines
  • Project management, Reporting, and Process Improvement:
    • Manage multiple research and design projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery, high-quality data collection and analysis, and actionable outcomes
    • Present recommendations to Tupande and OAF leadership and stakeholders, influencing decision-making at all levels of the organization
    • Improve research and design processes, ensuring they are efficient, scalable, and aligned with Tupande’s goals

Qualifications

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Design, Human-computer interaction, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • At least 4+ years of experience in user research, human-centered design, or related fields, with demonstrated experience leading teams and managing research projects
  • Expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including user interviews, surveys, usability testing, and data analysis
  • Experience in managing teams of researchers and designers
  • Proficiency in design thinking methodologies and tools with experience leading cross-functional teams through the design process
  • Experience communicating with varied audiences, including translating complex research findings into clear, actionable insights

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
