Communications Volunteer Liberia

The Role
Street Child is calling for individuals hoping to gain valuable experience in the development sector by undertaking a voluntary communications role in Liberia. Street Child is currently seeking an individual to work with Street Child of Liberia to create a database of case studies, photographs and stories to be used for crucial marketing and fundraising purposes. This placement is a unique opportunity to make a critical contribution to an organisation that is setting up and scaling its efforts to enable out of school children in Liberia to access a meaningful education.
Street Child offers placements for anywhere between four to twelve weeks, supporting our work in Liberia and the work of our partner organisations.
This role represents a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic charity with a passion for innovation within the sector. The successful candidate’s work will contribute towards our commitment to creating positive change for some of the world’s most vulnerable children and provide a superb platform for further career development.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate would have the following:
- A degree in journalism, marketing, media studies, or other relevant subjects or a proven ability in communications
- Excellent social media skills
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- A proactive and professional approach
- A creative and innovative mind
- A passion for international development
- Photography and video skills are an advantage
Prior experience of digital marketing, managing social media content or working with online media outlets preferred. A working knowledge of design software packages (esp. Photoshop) and a flair for design would be a distinct advantage – but not essential for an otherwise excellent candidate looking to develop in this area and with strong interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities
Working alongside the Street Child of Liberia team, key responsibilities will include:
- Collating case studies from the various Street Child projects in Liberia
- Building the visual media library of Liberia, including photographs and film footage for marketing purposes
- Training local staff on case study writing and photography
- Collecting, consolidating and analysing data from the field
- Liaising with local partners and stakeholders
- Weekly reporting from the Liberia team to the UK team
- Blog contribution in the field
- Researching interesting personal stories and the impact of the projects in Liberia
Terms
The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in austere conditions when required, and to travel independently within Liberia. The applicant must be able to manage their work plan and report regularly to the team on progress, and will be considered a valued member of the team.
A fundraising commitment will be required of the successful applicant, for which support will be provided by Street Child UK staff. The successful applicant will be required to live in Liberia for at least 4 weeks. Food and flights are at the applicant’s own expense. Accommodation will be provided by Street Child at a fixed cost, and may require sharing rooms with another volunteer of any gender. A more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for an interview.
Whilst this is initially a voluntary role, for applicants with relevant experience who have the ability to add strategic value, there is potential to attain a more permanent position with the organisation.
