1. Animal Welfare Officer

Reporting to the Programme Manager, the post-holder will field work within Kenya and other Brooke East Africa operation countries, focused on (a) direct engagement with higher learning and strategic Institutions; and (b) field engagement with Animal Health Practitioners and implementing partners; to promote Brooke East Africa’s equine wealth programme work.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Establish linkages and relations with veterinary schools at all levels, government institutions, non-state actors and other entities and identify areas of mutual interest and strategic collaborations that promotes Brooke East Africa’s Animal Health work
  • Explore and secure collaboration arrangements and agreements through strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs)
  • Develop joint plans with the institutions to implement the MOUs’ objectives
  • Ensure timely delivery and implementation of the MOUs/joint plans
  • Regularly review MOUs to ensure proactive and progressive adoption of learnings and innovations
  • Work closely with advocacy and programme teams to identify opportunities for collaborations with strategic governmental and policy institutions/bodies involved in welfare and animal health to promote and advocate for equine welfare
  • Assess and identify capacity gaps and needs of Animal Health Practitioners (AHPs)
  • Develop and implement training programs for AHPs to address the identified gaps and needs
  • Develop and implement mentorship plan for the AHPs using Brooke’s Mentorship frameworks
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the capacity building and mentorship interventions; and follow-up/review with relevant adjustments
  • Identify forums, conferences or initiatives that have a veterinary engagement angle to animal welfare or have themes that resonate with Brooke
  • Develop and submit abstracts to conference organizers in order to seek opportunities for formal participation
  • Prepare and present position papers, data, information or material on behalf of Brooke during the conference
  • Follow up on agreements and resolutions made during these forums/conferences to ensure Brooke’s positions or commitments are achieved
  • Receive and provide input and support to other officers whose jobs are interdependent with this role
  • Supply reports and other required information and data to other parts of the organization as required
  • Actively participate in team and or staff meeting; adding value to the meeting agenda and discussions for the purpose of enhancing organizational goals in community engagement

Knowledge and Skills Required

· Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine or related field

· Over 5-years’ experience working in NGO or Institutional set up

· Competency in building and strengthening collaborations and networking

· Expertise in capacity building, delivering training and adult learning facilitation

· Experience in developing and delivering information at high-level policy and academic forums

· Good planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting skills

· Good representation and negotiation skills

· Collaborative and supportive approach to resolving complex issues with stakeholders
