OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Biomedical Engineer will provide technical assistance to the USAID Eliminate TB Project in medical equipment preventive and curative maintenance service focuses on TB-related equipment for FMOH and the project implementation regions. In close collaboration with the Technical Director, the Senior TB Laboratory Advisors, and HSS Advisor, s/he will assist in strengthening the federal and regional biomedical engineering units/departments of FMOH and RHBs to have a strong system to maintain diagnostic equipment in health facilities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment.
  • Organize hands-on training for the biomedical engineers in preventive and curative maintenance of microscopes, X-ray machines, GeneXpert, and other new diagnostic equipment as appropriate.
  • Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment.
  • Train clinicians and other personnel on the proper use of biomedical equipment as per the need or request for new devices.
  • Set objective  for operational research and conduct in representative health facilities
  • Conduct equipments assessment per respective TB lab tests and produce a recommendation for appropriate platform
  • Troubleshoot problems arising in the installation and commissioning of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Managing and testing including field testing of clinical equipment and medical devices in hospitals and laboratories.
  • Develop specifications for equipment to be procured and interact with manufacturers and home office for purchases of medical equipment and supplies as appropriate.
  • Review the technical specification of medical equipment and assist in timely distributions, installation, and functioning of procured bio-medical equipment.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest developments in the field of Biomedical Engineering nationally and actively participate in national forums to assist the FMoH in strengthening the biomedical engineering service.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum seven years of related work experience
  • Knowledge and experience of the biomedical engineering needs of the country and have worked in related areas supporting the system.
  • Recent experience working with the Ethiopian health diagnostic biomedical engineering service.
  • Experience of working with USG project on biomedical engineering.
  • Excellent communication, and interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership, and the ability to work collaboratively with culturally diverse partners.
  • Computer literacy; competency with Microsoft Office, internet, and email systems.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with colleagues and partners.
  • Willingness to travel frequently (up to 50% time) within Oromia and Amhara regions required.
