Position title: Biomonitoring Intern, Faro National Park

REPORTS TO: Landscape Director/Biomonitoring Officer

Location: Voko, Faro National Park

Context The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), Cameroon Office, has launched a Young Graduate Professional Internship Programme to provide young graduates with the opportunity to gain valuable experience in conservation and familiarize themselves with the non-governmental organization (NGO) environment.

Position Summary The Biomonitoring Intern will support the Faro National Park team in coordinating in-field ecological monitoring and patrol activities. This position will report to the Landscape Director/Biomonitoring Officer and will collaborate closely with the Biomonitoring Assistant, the conservation service, and community members or guides to ensure that ecological data is collected, compiled, and archived according to AWF procedures. Additionally, the intern will assist the Biomonitoring Officer by downloading camera trap data into the database for identification and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of ongoing ecological monitoring activities in Faro National Park and its peripheries, ensuring data collection and management adhere to established monitoring protocols.
  • Assist in planning, conducting, and reporting on anti-poaching patrol missions, including data grooming.
  • Manage camera trap activities, including deployment, data encoding, and maintaining an up-to-date camera trap database.
  • Participate in data analysis and image identification from camera traps.
  • Ensure effective communication between field rangers and the operational Control Room using the InReach System.
  • Collaborate with the Biomonitoring Assistant, local communities, and rangers to coordinate the deployment and retrieval of camera traps in the field.
  • Under the supervision of the Biomonitoring Officer, produce concise and well-written field reports to support program activities, and assist in organizing capacity-building workshops.
  • Provide additional support to the Biomonitoring Officer/Landscape Director as needed.

Learning The Young Graduate Professional Internship Programme is a learning opportunity. Therefore, the intern must demonstrate a strong aptitude and motivation to learn and grow. The candidate should be open to feedback and ready to take the initiative.

Requirements and skills

  • A university degree (minimum bachelor’s degree) in Ecology, Wildlife Management, Protected Area Management, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with GIS analysis (particularly ArcGIS or QGIS).
  • Proven statistics and data analysis capabilities (Excel and other relevant software).
  • Ability to manage databases and experience with file management on Google Drive.
  • At least one year of proven experience in a similar role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and French.
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Office suite, online research, etc.).
  • IT skills are an asset.
  • Culturally aware and able to work effectively in diverse cultural environments.
  • Capable of working independently in isolated and challenging conditions.
  • Adherence to AWF’s values.
